It probably has alot to do with luck, since I had trouble with him as well.

I didn't really think he was all that great actually lol I went to all that trouble to get him, and then whenever I summoned him to fight a boss, he got killed almost instantly.

Ultimia beat me once only cause i didnt know what to expect with that life draining thing which suked at my level but I narrowly managed to beat it with 1 guy standing.
never tried zodiark, I just got so bored of the game after i leveled 3 characters to 99 i kinda just quit.

0. I killed them both fairly easy and i was expecting Zodiark to be a bit of a challenge. Zodiark isn't that bad to use either especially with that final eclipse move which can take off about 50,000 HP.

Zodiark - Defeated twice
Ultima - Never been beaten
The only reason i was beaten by zodiark is the fact that i wasn't quite ready for his Darkja attack and the second time i ran out of MP on the way to him (rolls eyes)

I think Zodiark is all about luck, cos i got stuck into him like 3-4 times and had him down to a tiny amount of health and i cudnt make any moves from there, get becoming amune to physical attacks and magic. i think killing him swiftly is the way to go 
Ultima was ok, first try not too bad.
