restarting FFXI

hi, i used to play FFXI, but as you can see in my sig, i retired, but i'm going to try and give it another shot

i'm planning on becoming a summoner, is that a good choice? i heard it's a job that's least wanted in parties...

also, i'm most likely to be a Tarutaru, but does it really matter what race to pick?

i know i need to complete the quest for being able to play as a summoner, so i'm probably going black mage or white mage to start out, my goal is to level up as quick as possible and then become a summoner, any other suggestions for a job?

and at last, any important things i should watch out for?

In response to your plight, Summoners are often regarded as "Main heal" because of their mana pools, being a Taru will give you more MP, so you'll be more likely caught up in that. And Black mage really isn't an option since once you get the avatars, you'll have good spells with them, so White Mage really is the way to go when leveling Summoner. People always seem to like smn/whm in parties cause of the huge MP and curing ability. If you don't want to be stuck as main heal a lot and want to be a damage dealer like the job should be, then be prepared to solo a lot.

As Ramza said, you're going to be main healing until level 70. At level 70, exp parties will recognize you as someone who can actually deal some heavy damage as well. Because you'd be main healing for almost the entire time you'd be leveling this job, it'd be wise to level white mage. Generally, a summoner with a black mage sub wil be overlooked because they really have little purpose for parties. When parties search for summoners they're usually looking for a healer. They can't do adequate damage at lower levels.

One of the nicest things about summoner is that you are able to solo throughout the entire game. It is slow at some times, but at least you can solo some experience while looking for a party. Bombs are awesome to fight because you just put Carbuncle on it and wait for it to self-destruct. You could put Carbuncle on a Bomb five levels higher than you and pull in 300exp per kill. It's rather nice.

I think the best route for you to take would be to take black mage to 18 and get your subjob stuff done. Then take white mage to 37 and do your summoner quest. Then you're set to take summoner to 75.

no, my sub would be white mage definitly, but the job i want to level to the level i can start with summoner, something near level 20? and then i change my job to summoner/white mage,
and all i actually want to do is summoning avatars

summoner is an advanced job, to unlock it, you'd have to be level 30 first. So the leveling would look a lot like this: WHM to 18, get subjobs unlocked, take BLM or RDM to 15, WHM/BLM or RDM to 30, unlock SMN, WHM to 37, SMN 1-75....

That's why I suggested this. It's the fastest route for taking a new character to 75.

Get the jobs you either don't want to play or only need as subjobs out of the way first so when you start the job you want to play, you can fully enjoy it.

would playing a warrior to 18 also work? when i was still playing i noticed it leveled much faster then when i was playing my red mage, but i never got further then level 2 with my black mage, so i don't have much experience with it

also, what is the best way to level? just grind enemies? or are there other sources, which are slightly more fun to get exp?

EDIT: and now i come to think of it, today i was leveling my mage on WoW, and mages are able to teleport to all capitals in the game, i find this very useful, now i saw some people casting teleports in FFXI too, which job can do that? i never really bothered to look what job they were

If you plan on leveling summoner to 75, I wouldn't even recommend touching warrior as it isn't of any use as a subjob to any mage job. While it may be fun, you wouldn't be invited to many parties.

The only way to gain exp during the lower levels (1-30ish) is by grinding. You can do quests later on that give you exp scrolls, but the quests generally require a lot of people to help you.

White mages are able to teleport to six different locations in the game. These locations you're able to teleport to are about fifteen minutes from any major city riding a chocobo. Black mages have the ability to warp to their home point at level 17. Like the stone you get at the beginning of World of Warcraft, but you can use it as long as you have the mp required to cast it; rather than waiting two hours.

For grinding, tanks and mages usually get invites to parties long before melee get them. If you want invites, the mage is the way to go.

i was in fact planning to use the warrior to level to my subjob level, and then change white mage, as suggested

and at last, something i've been wondering... how does the summoner fighting style look like?

it he like completely useless when an avatar is out? i mean will he be unable to cast any white magic, and only avatar spells?

or will his white magic always be open to him?

Each avatar has a list of abilities they're able to use. These abilities require the use of your MP to use on top of the MP it requires to cast and keep them out.

For instance, it cost 5mp to cast Carbuncle. At level 1, it would cost 1mp every three seconds to keep Carbuncle out. Now a healing ability that Carbuncle has is called Healing Ruby and this ability cost 5mp to use.

The cool thing about summoners is that they get a lot of mp to cover all of their mp expenses. The downside is that a summoner is completely useless without mp.
