that was something i already figured out, but i will not be able to use my own healing spells while the avatar is out, right?

and also, how big is the average MP pool of a SMN/WHM?

Oh. If you're a SMN/WHM, you'll be able to use whatever spells your white mage would have at half the level of your summoner. White mage has Cure at level 1. So you'll have Cure right off the bat when you start summoner (as long as you're subbing white mage). What really sucks though is that you won't get Cure II on your summoner (so to speak) until your summoner is level 22 since white mage doesn't get it until 11.

Depends on your job. As a hume, you'd have about 30mp as a SMN1/WHM1. This would be enough to have Carbuncle out for about 25 seconds or so. Probably enough to summon it, kill a couple worms, and then have to heal again. This is when you invest in Rolanberry Pies that will give you an extra 50mp for 30 minutes. =D

but will i be able to use my white mage spells with a summon out?
doesn't matter wether it is MP inefficient or not, just wanna know if it's possible or not

Haha. Yes. As long as you have the mp to do it, your avatar being out does not hinder your ability to use spells or abilities from your sub job. The only thing you can't do while an avatar is out is /heal.

When you sit to regain your hp and mp. You can't do that with an avatar out.

Yeah- so do I. I just didn't want to say * and have you ask why. Haha. Either way I was screwed. =P You'll love summoner. Once you actually have the ability to solo stuff, you can do just about anything you want in the game all by yourself. And people are always asking for summoners when they're looking for help because of that very reason.

still one last question...
i heard there's this thing called "carbuncle kiting"

what's it good for?

is it smart to "waste" MP on healing a summon while it's fighting?
thus reducing the time it can be "out"

and, do summons use your MP to cast spells such as stone, aero etc?
or do they have an MP pool of their own?

you can see i have never played or played with a summoner, never got high enough :/

Carbuncle kiting is used to fight monsters that you either don't want to kill too fast, or that will take forever to kill and you wouldn't be able to handle fighting them with another avatar. When you're using Carbuncle at higher levels, you're able to have him out without using MP aside from what it took to cast him. You can get equipment that lets you have him our for free. This allows your MP to be available for spells to keep yourself alive in case you have any problems.

When you're kiting with Carbuncle, you have him assault the monster, and you run out of range so that Carbuncle is doing all of the work and you can't get hit by any "area of effect" spells. While Carbuncle is busy, you'll cast Blink and Stoneskin on yourself so that you can't take damage or can't be hit for a few attacks. When Carbuncle dies, the monster will then come after you. You'll re-summon Carbuncle and he'll automatically attack the monster. If the monster catches up to you before Carbuncle attacks him, your blinks and stoneskins prevent you from taking damage. That's Carbuncle kiting. It may take awhile, but it's fool-proof if done correctly.

Avatars don't get that many spells, but most of them that they do get are pretty pointless if you're in a party. If you're soloing, you should always stick to the physical attack moves. They generally do more damage than their tier II spells.

Also note that you cannot cast cure on your avatars. The only way to cure one of your avatars is to use one of their own abilities and they don't get them right away. They are "area of effect" as well so they'll not only cure themselves, but your party as well.

When it really comes down to it, if you don't have to use an ability, don't use it. Get a feel for how much mp you're using to keep an avatar out. See how much damage your avatar is dealing. For instance, Carbuncle gets Poison Nails at level 5, I believe. That's only like 5 mp or something. If that's the case, and if it's dealing more damage than two of its normal attacks, then you would want to.

When you use an avatar's abilities, they require your mp to be used. They do not have their own mp.

While you're in a party, you're more than likely only going to be using your mp to cure. Summoners are usually invited to parties as a last resort for main healers. From my experience, the only way a summoner can actually do what their job was designed to do would be to create their own parties. Personally, I hate being leader. That's just me though. =P
