Well, I had a much more pleasant beginning than I expected. About ten minutes after i got my character created and logged (a red mage) a lvl 75 red mage approached me and asked me if i was new. I said, "very much so" and he showed me the ropes, gave me 6000 gil, invited me to his linkshell, and helped me do my first mission. It was pretty cool, he told me I should expect to solo til about lvl 14, but that won't be that big of a deal for me.
I can really tell though that the interface is designed aroung using a controller, playing on the PC the controls are kind of awkward. But all in all, so far i am enjoying it greatly.

Yes, keep in mind its a PS2 port. FFXI works great with a controller its on PS2 and 360 and a lot of PC players prefer controllers too. It is very playable without one though, just dont use the mouse and it'll grow on you i'm sure. the way all the menus are hidden and pop only when you need them is odd at first, but later you'll appreciate it.

I <3 my Mithra red mage. I miss her sometimes. I still renew my account and log in every few months to say hi to old friends who still play, but I don't think I could go back for good.
Have fun!

It's definately worth it if you have the time to put into it. You will hit some walls though, the big one is making gil. You will be stuck in the lower levels if you dont have good gil. Even the half decent equipment costs a fortune, dont get me started on my Nin being stuck on 40 because I cant get the gear I need (Utsusemi Ni/Kote/Empress hairpin etc, etc, etc ><)

An excellent game that is well worth it. The only reason I stopped playing is that, like with every MMORPG I've ever played, stuff starts costing far too much around the higher levels than you can get together in a good few months.
Contrary to popular belief ;P I think this game thoroughly deserves to be included with the numbered Final Fantasies... the storyline is all there - storylines - if you want them.
The music in Chains of Promathia is some of the best Final Fantasy music I've heard, and the job system is both well designed and easy to use.
I'd say this is a must-have for MMORPG fans.

Meh, I'd get it if I didn't have to pay every month.

This game really shouldn't have even gotten a number to it. Final Fantasy Online would have been a much better name.

FFXI >>>>>>>>>> WoW.
It's definitely worth playing, brilliant jobs, storyline and gameplay. My second favourite FF by far. Also, the fact you don't have to make another character to choose a different job is SO much better than having to make a million characters for different jobs that WoW has.

Are you on Carbuncle server by any chance? People are so friendly on that server, random people cast like, Protect IV on me for no reason. The friendliness is something most MMORPGs lack, in my opinion, too many 1337 people, and elitists.
But that RDM is wrong about Soloing, you can go to Valkurm Dunes at about lvl 10 and do pretty well there.
I saw a party of Lvl 7's there the other day....but they had a PL.
And as for the controls, as long as they're on Compact settign rather than Full Size keyboard setting, they're easy.
