Absolutely, it did seem as though the character designer had lost his gusto by that point and just slapped something together. Very sloppy indeed.
Perhaps having Yu Yevon take his former human-form from 1000 years before might have made it more satisfying.

That would have been a whole lot better. Or at least some hideous, gigantic fiend.

But even original Metroids look meaner than Yu Yevon. And of course, Metroids in large numbers were a pain in most Metroid Games.

Good point, and they didn't cast auto-life on you either.
And really, why WOULD Yu Yevon cast auto-life on everyone anyway? It makes no sense just as a boss fight, but even less story-wise. Jecht was the one who wanted to be stopped, as far as we know Yu Yevon wouldn't want to give your party an easy time beating him.

That might lead us to the conclussion that their brains fried when making that boss battle.
Yes, Jecht wanted to be stopped yet he never held back during that fight (except when you use the Tidus talk option), yet Yu Yevon wanted to destroy you and he casted auto life on the party, which is quite retarded.

Eh, Yu Yevon's looking crappy amused me. Kind of reminded me of those cartoons where there was some big and powerful villain, only to be a little midget guy in a big robot suit with all of the levers and stuff. xD
Kind of goes to show how Yu Yevon was the guy/thing operating the levers and switchboard, but was really only a little guy in the robot suit that was Spira.

That conclusion is logical
I always kinda assumed that Jecht COULDN'T hold back, since the Aeon he'd been turned into kinda controlled him or whatever.

Well yes, normally the Final Aeon/Sin Alter-Ego was most likely in control, due to the influence that Yu Yevon had over the Final Aeon used to create Sin. Yu Yevon was infact inside Jecht now that he was used as the next Sin, therefore Jecht had to fight to keep his own sanity side while avoiding Yu Yevon's madness from poisoning him, which ultimately failed since Yu Yevon retakes full control during the Final Boss fight.
If you watch closely, when Jecht has his overdrive charged, if you use the talk option you can discharge Jechth's overdrive, which makes Jecht show signs of struggling for control. Though, Yu Yevon's will is far greater, and thus Jecht ends up being fully manipulated by Yu Yevon to destroy Tidus and his party. It is the same effect with the Dark Aeon battle afterward, the Aeons become victims of a desperate Yevon looking for a powerful host, but since the chain of the Final Summoning was broken, Yevon had not Final Aeon to control leaving him vulnerable. The aeon were strong, but they and Yuna lacked the will and skill to resist Yevon's influence, thus them being easily surrendered to Yevon's control. The reason why Yevon could not be killed until Yuna's aeons were slain it's because he could shield himself with their essences, and also because their presence strengthen him. The consecutive Dark Aeons defeats were a strain too great for Yu Yevon's consciousness, having his invincibility shattered and thus making him vulnerable.
With all that, we have enough excuses to demand Square Enix to fix Yu Yevon and make him a better character design
