I am of the opinion that there is only one of each Aeon, so two of the same type can't fight each other. The only thing is, what if Yuna was about to summon Ifrit, oops, she can't because another summoner on the other side of spira is overkilling a cactuar with him. OK so she summons Ixion, nope, he's being used by another summoner to increase his OD. See? It's a bit daft isn't it!
Toeryn, I don't think the Dark Aeons are she same Aeons, rather a twisted alternative version. I don't know, it's a shame they wern't explained in the game.

She? lol. I'm going to torture you with forever now.
Maybe it could be that summons of the same species can't be used in close range? That would certainly explain a lot.

Well it would be a helluva long fight if two ifrits just kept lobbing fireballs at each other.
Think of it this way. Aeons are the same soul, so would it be possible for aeons to fight themselves. Just like- could YOU fight YOURSELF??? Could YOU create two parts of your soul and split them up to fight each other.
As for other summoners using the same aeons at the same time, lets just pretend they are dead, just to make things simpler

see what i dont get, is if the aeons are the same, and thats the reason you can summon them at the same time, why #1 would hers have diferent names(like geez the aeon has to remember being called like 1000 diffrent names? sucks to be him/her) and #2, why would hers or yours and hers be so much different in strength? but it does explain in a way theres only one of each, when you fight seymore the last time, if you summon anima, he says something like "so you'd turn on me too? so be it" refering to anima, as the same anima he's summoned

My second theory is that the Aeons don't have a unique relationship with the Fayth, they are somthing older, much older and that is why 2 may be summoned at the same time theoretically, although that would be rare and require very cataclismic circumstances. As a FF theologist (Ha!) I think that the aeons of X are multi-dimensional beings, that fit the world they occupy in much the same way as Gilgamesh does.
Aeons are basically gods and like our human gods, we will never understand how they work, they just do.
If you believe all that shit

Um.........you people seem to be forgetting that Aeons have regular ol' physical attacks <.<
The dark aeons are corrupted fayth, but i was under the impression that it was the same fayth, doesnt X-2 show that somewheres? Hmm...this is a toughie. There ARE assloads of fayth though, so maybe multiple fayths can become Ifrits or Bahamuts or whatever. The except to that of course would be Anima, as she was a special case.

What of the Magus Sisters and Yojimbo? Quite unique summons, IMO.
I just think that if you are in a certain range of another summoner the fayth will not allow you to summon the same Aeon.

Just to back up what people have already said...
Yuna has to gain the summons... obviously. The Aeon Valefor is only at Besaid and there is just one fayth for it meaning it can't be called into the same battle with another Summoner.
You see Dona at Kilika, presuming she just obtained Ifrit. When Yuna went in the Chamber of the Fayth, she would have prayed to the same Fayth.
Omg, it is so hard to explain O_O

maybe it's the rule of the fayth, that no aeon should face itself in battle.
or for the fact a fayth in a temple is the "real" aeon and the summoners gain the "copy" of the fayth to use in battle, hence why there are more than one of the same aeon in use.

Funny if Aeons can be called only by one summoner only. Think about if during a battle Ifrit would just say when Yuna tries summon him:
"Sorry cant come, i´m busy here fighting so take care". And then some cruel fiend would kill Tidus& company.
