Playing enough Blitzball is the only way to get Wakka's Celestial weapon, and also the only way to get one of the sigils for it. So, yes.

Hai Grimiore. Be nice to us Survivors now. You don't get too much out of Blitzball, IMO... Besides a LOAD of fun. It's even more fun when you cheat and create the perfectest team EVAR. Holy shit. The spellcheck is saying perfectest is a fucking word. ZOMG.

It's crazy fun. Also, you can recruit and make your own team. It's fun.

As mentioned earlier you also get Wakka's Ultimate Weapon. Defantly worth it.

You get many items like Elixirs ethers and stuff which are useful in the begining of the game.
You also get rename cards to rename your Aeons, as well as many spheres for the grid.
