So who actually listened to Maechen? - Page 4

I quite liked Maechen, even though he is a total cliche. I like information really so I normally talk to every NPC.
On my first playthrough I talked to him at least 3 times wherever he was, incase he would say something new.
Now though I just talk to him once and and I can remember the rest so I don't need to talk to him again.

oh god old people x_x he was just an old fart looking for friends! i didnt like his voice. it sounded like those spitty voices. you know, when old people talk and spit all over you x_O? anyway, yeah i listened to his stories like story time. listened to them but...don't remember them. *sigh* i wanna replay X again v_v

I was quite curious as to why he knew so much of Spira's history anyway, even some minor stuff that the Church of Yevon desperately wanted to erase from minds of Spira's inhabitants. Of course, thanks to FFX-2, I found out exactly why Maechen knew so much, though it depends if you actually completed the Zanarkand Ruins area with 100%.

He's actually an unsent. You can hear his voice during one of the spheres displaying images of Zanarkand during the time period that Shuyin and Lenne were still alive.

Yu Yevon was a summoner who was mocked by his peers. Obviously he went crazy at one point. So when he and all the other inhabitants were faced with destruction at the hand of Bevelle, they all chose to preserve themselves by what ever means available. The regular inhabitants made themselves into a giant fayth and dreamed up the dream Zanarkand but Yu Yevon preserved himself and the summoning arts through Sin. I think it was part revenge and part preserving the strange form of summoning that he pioneered in (wasn't he disliked for using summoning in a different way?)

Well part of that is my supposition. I think the main idea is he wanted revenge and to preserve himself and the summoning arts. Yunalesca isn't really explained; we can only guess. I think she was in it for the fame and preservation as she became unsent too.

On a lighter note, it seems the common consensus is in favor of Machean. I should have made this a poll thread, oohh well. Also, at this point Machean's situation (unsent) has been established. Thanks for posting everyone!

Never. I listened to him the first time just to see what the old man in green had to say.

But then...he talks so slowwwwww! and for so long.

In FFX-2 it was just horrible!

Ah, I hated Machaen!

I tried to pay attention to what he said, but it was just too complicated and boring.. Especially in X-2. I felt like a college student having to sit through a loooong lecture whenever he started talking. I was glad to find out that he was an unsent.. No more listening to him go on and on about the past!

Oh him, yeah I listened to him, even though it was quite boring, I remember a couple of places where I just wanted him to shut up, like on the calm lands in X, and in X-2 when you go to the Youth League and he turns up and starts rambling, I think its good that you can skip through his ramblings and stuff on that part

but i think you have to listen to him without interrupting to get towards 100% so that sucked.

I soaked up every word he said, which easy, because he had that grandfather-like way of telling stories. IMO he is the most interesting character in X-2. But in X, he was boring and useless.
