I've just recently done this on my NSG game, so my memory has been refreshed. It took me quite a few retries as well. I think I ended up doing it by staying as close to the centre of the path as possible. On the part where it turns, I was successful when the red butterfly moved far enough away I could hog the edge and squeeze past it without triggering it. I think it depends more on how fast you reach that part as to where that particular butterfly is at that moment in time, so just keep trying and you'll get there in the end.

I did it only once...
Then Tidus wouldn't stop running and ran off the screen!
Why is the last butterfly so close to the exit? It all resets when you leave the area!

I guess its a test of control as well as speed :-)
At least its more interesting than the mind-numbing boredom of lightning dodges. I'd like to Blitz Ace whoever thought that was a good idea :-(

I tried it once then gave up immediately, Kimahri is my weakest character and the reward didn't seem worth it.

Kimahri is the quintessential jack-of-all-trades, master of none character in FFX, he can do things a lot earlier than a lot of characters, but since every character can do the same things as each other (with the exception of Overdrive differences/summons in Yuna's case), I can see why a lot of people drop him over the multi-hitters (Tidus, Wakka, Lulu)
In saying that, he's far from useless, his Ronso Rages are always handy, especially Stone Breath, Mighty Guard, White Wind and Nova. And of course, since I like to rage on about how good NSG games are, he becomes very essential there too :-)

^^ Kimahri's overdrive can get you out of a few tight spots. If you find your party is to week in a certain battle, Nova or Stone Breath come in very handy.
Also, it you teach him the basics of each class: Steal, Use, Cure, Esuna, Fire, Thunder, Water, Blizzard, Haste, Dark Attack and Power Break, he can cover for other characters early in the game, like if you need esuna and it's not Yuna's turn or she is KO'd.

I remember not know what I was messing up on .. and kept failing. I realized there was a butterfly behind me, so basically you start a little south on the path, have to go north a little, then go back south and follow the path. Took many tries but got it eventually. Worth it, that weapon kicks arse!

I've always finished the course after a handful of tries, but I remember having trouble on the last turn, too. You just gotta memorize how the butterflies fly, because they always fly in the same direction, so eventually you'll know where the red ones are headed, and they can then be avoided.
Sorry I can't be a bit more specific, but my PS2 and games are packed up, so I can't really start it up and check.
