priests... clerics --> white mages
summoners are former priests/clerics or white mages, in fact they still are when they become summoners
when summoning disappeared they became priests and clerics stayed to worship gods and all that crap... they perform sendings instead of the summoners...
that's my theory
ofc some summoners such as Yuna become entertainers, sphere hunters, blitzers or anything else that is non-priestly :p
