| Final Fantasy VIII The first game in the series to consistently use realistically proportioned characters, FF8 also threw more of a futuristic mix into the old (Hi-)potion that is Final Fantasy. |

Although, with that game, it might not hurt. Considering I didn't even get... almost any of the things I should have and I normally get them all. Cheat free of course.

Grrr, it's not really cheating, lol. I prefer to view it as a getting-most-out-of-the-game sorta thing. Anyway, the first time I played it, I did not use a guide at all. I was in the fourth disc when I realized that I've missed so many secrets and such in the game, so I borrowed a guide from a friend and replayed the whole thing all over again. I just wanted to finish the game and get everything, you know? Even the cards. I have to know where they are located, so hence...the guide. But anyway, I really recommend that you replay it. Seriously. Guide or not, go play it.
EDIT: Well look at the poll. Looks like someone's gonna have to start playing a game soon.

Nah, I agree, using a guide is definitely not cheating. Especially after having played the game before and I agree, it's really the only way you're going to get 100% out of the game. Besides, you can alway control how much of the guide you'll use.
As for the game, I definitely recommend giving it another try. Now some fans didn't like the characters or story, but IMHO, FFVIII is one of the best in the series.
Replay it and replay it again Lol...

I'm right where you are. I'm not a fan of FFVIII's story line, OR the main protagonist, but I've replayed it a few times over just for the sake of completing it 100%.

Yup, to reiterate what everyone else just said, you should really play it again. The game came out when I was 8 years old and I played it when I was 9 (never got around to finishing, though, despite the several game files I went through), and it's only now that I'm mature enough to fully appreciate the depth of the storyline. Unfortunately, I was born several years too late because the FFVIII fandom is pretty much getting run over by the FFVII fanboys (judging from your avatar, you used to be one of them, and I can of course forgive you for that, but I am really glad that you're willing to open up your mind to FFVIII as well-- it deserves your respect). But it's the storyline that has kept it alive this far, and between you guys and me, the characters in FFVIII were characterized better than the characters in FFVII. FFVII had Sephiroth, and Sephiroth kicks ass, and there's really no similar character in FFVIII. Still, give it a chance. You won't regret it, I guarantee you.

I wholeheardtedly dissagree...
Every single protagonist in the game lacked a strong history. Face it, the directors ran out of ideas and threw every single character into the very same orphanage...including one NPC;Cid, and two of the bad guys; Seifer and Edea...
That's eight characters...eight of the leading character rolls in the game all originated from the exact same place, and the only thing they have to say for themselves is "Ohh...I don't remember my childhood..."
Lame...
If it's a debate between which game has better characterization, FFVII is more time-worthy. Each and every single FFVII character has a depthful history. I can narrow each and every one of them down with pin-point precision.
Let's take a look at FFVII's character development:
Cloud
Participant in the "Last Order" to accompany Sephiroth to Nibelhiem. Victim of Hojo's experimentations. Held a childhood dream of becoming a first class soldier. Outcasted as a child, yet driven to prove everyone that he was worth something.
Aerith
Last survivor of the Cetra. Participent in proffessor Ghast's research. Grew up with an adoptive mother in the slums. Formerly infatuated with Zack.
Tifa
Cloud's not-so-childhood-friend. Born and raised in Nibelhiem. Victim of Sephiroth's rage in the Nibelhiem mission five years prior. Lost her father in said massacre. Zanghan's best pupil. Tifa was the most underdeveloped character, yet she has more depth than the main character in FFVIII.
Barret
Born and raised in North Corel. Formerly a coal miner. Fought off Shinra Inc. multiple times to prevent them from building a reactor in his hometown. Lost his wife in North Corel's "incident". Adopted his best friend's daughter.
Cid
Leader of Shinra's spacecraft/aircraft design program. Has dreams of visiting outer space. Yearns to exact revenge on ShinRa for abandoning him and confiscating his aircrafts.
Vincent
Former Turk. In love with Lucrecia. Sworn enemy of Hojo. Victim of Hojo's experiments. Vincent has his own video game for crying out loud...
Yuffie
Daughter of king Godo. Princess of Wutai. Seeks to collect materia in order to bring back pride to her homeland. Sworn enemy of ShinRa.
Cait Sith/Reeve
ShinRa spy/employee. Architextural designer of Midgar, and Urban development director for ShinRa.
Now let's compare that to FFVIII's character development:
Squall
Doesn't remember his past. Later discovers that he grew up in an orphanage under the care of Edea.
Zell
Doesn't remember his past. Later discovers that he grew up in an orphanage under the care of Edea.
Quistis
Doesn't remember her past. Later discovers that she grew up in an orphanage under the care of Edea.
Selphie
Doesn't remember her past. Later discovers that she grew up in an orphanage under the care of Edea.
Rinoa
Daughter of General Caraway. Started a rebel group just to piss him off...
Irvine
Grew up in a small orphanage. Only character who seemingly remembers his past, yet keeps it a secret for some retarded unknown reason...

The problem for me with 8 is the characters and story. However, I think that is possibly one of the most solid in terms of system and gameplay. A lot of people hate the draw and junctioning systems but I like them, and being limited to 4 commands can bring a bit more thought back into it after 7's "everyone-can-do-everything" approach. So from that point of view I'd say it's worth another shot. But if you're talking about catching more of the plot I'd say don't bother, you didn't miss too much...
