Final Fantasy VIII The first game in the series to consistently use realistically proportioned characters, FF8 also threw more of a futuristic mix into the old (Hi-)potion that is Final Fantasy.

There was no character development with many of the characters, no interesting character backgrounds, maybe with Squall it was different, but still, overall, they were an awful bunch of characters.

Nah, I wasn't refering to the beginning of the game, I meant later on at Matron's house where they piece their pasts together and Quistis says "I thought I was in love with you."
Even when Quistis did mention that to Squall after the dance, it wasn't emotional at all. She sounded like she didn't even care what she was saying.

And Squall always acted aggrivated with Rinoa. He even willingly let her go to the sorceress memorial then...seconds later he get's some crazy epiphany and busts her out. O.o
But wait...it wasn't even his idea to bust her out...it was Quistis's idea.
When everyone came back onto the ship, they were like "stupid, go get her" and THEN he rescued her... O.o

If you want to talk about horrible character development, look at FFXII. Absolutely horrifying.

Irvine: Acts all macho, and then he chokes when he's supposed to shoot Edea.

Zell: Hints in-game give out that he develops feelings for Rinoa, although its not disscussed in the main storyline. You can see some of this during the end of disc 2, when B-Garden is under attack by Galbadia.

Selphie and Quistis don't, other then Quistis developing feelings for Squall, and you can watch them grow stronger throughout the game.

Rinoa had the same deal as Squall, they hated eachother during the begining, but look at what happened.

Edit: No, he doesn't let her go willingly. At first, he actually protests, and says, "Im not letting them take you from me." but the only reason she goes, is because she is afraid Ultimecia will possess her, and then everyone will hate her. Squall didn't want her to go. And then when everyone tells Squall they wouldn't care if she got possesed (or something of that nature), then he decides to get her back.

Oh, please. FFXII didn't have horrible character development, it didn't have shitty background stories, at least with characters from FFXII, there was something to actually LIKE about them.

What you've mentioned about FFVIII doesn't make them seem really good

I don't know if Zell had feelings for Rinoa, Avin. I think he was just a passionate guy who wanted everyone to be happy. Zell was one of the least developed, I think. Also, I don't think Rinoa ever hated Squall--she challenged him a lot and teased him a lot, but I think she was interested in him the moment she met him; she was just trying to figure out what made him tick.

Final Fantasy VIII is fascinating to me, because it is such a mixture of success and failure. Its characters are fascinating and inspiring--they're young people who must overcome not only normal teenage issues such as isolation, fear of not being accepted, growing love, and self-esteem, but they must also overcome their pasts and various powerful forces--however, I am of the opinion that the creators were a bit lazy with the past plotline, and this is often I think what spoils the game for many people. Previous Final Fantasies (not only VII) had diverse characters who brought many different pasts to the story--VIII's characters for the most part came from a homogenous background, and I think this was a disappointment for many fans because it seemed to be lazy storytelling rather than a brilliant conclusion (GF excuse, anyone?).

The battle system is the same. The Guardian Forces are given a large role, which is wonderful for those who enjoy magic. However, attacks are scaled back so that you cannot deal as much damage as you could in previous games with fighters, unless you use limit breaks, which are risky unless you're using the lovely Aura spell that can only be found late in the game.

The villains also have their share of good and bad. Adel was terrible--thrown in randomly with very little purpose to her being there. Edea was the most effective, but her issues were quickly resolved. I think many gamers were upset because Edea did not fulfill a role traditional with the villain the player begins the game fighting, and then was followed by a succession of villains that the player had little to no attachment with. (And attachment is very important to give the player, as well as the character, a reason to battle.)

I think the reason most people dislike VIII is that it's a game that leads it's player into believing one thing--and then changes turn before the player realizes it's happening. One of the reasons that I'm very fond of this particular title, and hold it as my second favorite of the Final Fantasies, despite how wonderful XII is.

Actually...no one would know that Zell had supposed fealings for Rinoa unless they got their hands on this "handout". O.o
I for one, have never heard of this.

And Judge Rulia knows how much I dislike FFXII, but even IT had better character development than FFVIII.
No love story, but...better character development.

I like the game, the only thing i don't like is that it's TOO HARD unless you train alot. The final boss battle in FF8 is the hardest in any Final Fantasy i think, apart from one of the battles in FF10.

Music was beautiful in FF8. The storyline wasn't as good as FF7 i thought... But a nice FF game. Better than 10, 10-2

Actually, the more you train, the harder the monsters become.
You could beat the game in a whiz as long as you never level up.

We hear about her during all the game.

Edea was never a villain. http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/fi...edea-7115.html

If you play FFVIII for the second time(knowing that "evil" Edea is Ultimecia) you will see that the game have a main villain that is present during all the story(not diferent of Kefka or Kuja).

I guess you could say FFVI and VII spoiled me, they were the first two I played and my two favorite (in that order). Both games had fairly straightforward stories based on large casts of well-developed and original characters as well as original villians (A Kafkaesque killer clown and a man who makes Ed Gein look emotionally stable) who you met repeatedly and whose motives are made clear during the course of the game. Then I played VIII, with only six characters (FFVI had 16 and FFVII had 9) that seemed to be carbon copies of characters from the past game (squall is a brunette Cloud), who all had amenesia (one is already too much), and what's worse they've managed to forget having amenesia, that's double amenesia. Then we get to Ultimecia, who is she? we don't know. Does the game ever tell us? no. What is her goal? absorb the universe using time travel (that's always a covenient plot device that requires no scientific research). What's her motive? "I'm an evil witch from the future who get's wrongly (or rightly) persecuted for crimes I did and didn't commit in the past, crimes which I am apparently commiting now because I never commited them in the first place" (Time travel never makes sense). Defining characteristics? she replaces her Cs with Ks (how that would come across in speech is beyond me). Bad Habits? appearing in the last hour of the game and then rambling about nothing (and Time Travel) before giving up on trying to explain her insane motives and attac
