I'd like you to meet a friend of mine. His name is Squall:

I HATE Squall. My grandmother could take this guy... if it can so even be called. The story of his life is "I was trained to kill but I just write poetry instead". Squall has been quoted as saying "Death, you are my bitch lover!" and "Did mom make you feel her tits?". The guy is a wimp. An utter walking talking vagina in black clothing. People complain constantly about Vaan or Tidus being weak characters. They weren't even trained to fight but yet they stood up and took on the world. What about this guy? He was a trained mercenary. He's not a mercenary. He's pathetic! This is a mercenary...

nice rant. you know if you made a squall hate club i would so join - i have too much hate for too many FF characters

I would join too probably. I think it's more of his non-communicable attitude and personality that throws me off of his fanboy list. I just can't stand a main character that I can't relate to. I agree it's cool that he's unique and maybe a fitting main character in the role that FFVIII throws at him, however, he really didn't appeal to me too much.

Love the Wedding Crashers references though. lol

HAhahaha. Wow. This couldn't be more authentic as a post.
But I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I don't see how Squall can be placed into the category of a mercenary. This goes along quite well with my "SeeD is FF's version of the Army" theory. SeeD doesn't higher elite mercenary forces; they higher 16-18 year old kids to get the dirty job done in haste.

Squall has only been a member of SeeD for two or less years. He's not a proffessional. You wanna know who's a proffesional at what he does? Cid Highwind, that's who.

In case a lot of you weren't paying close attention to the FMV where Galbadia attacks Balamb, almost half of the students were wielding gunblades. Not that complicated kids.

Squall is a crybaby. He's unsure of his emotions, and he gives orders based on what the others (primarily Quistis) tell him he should do.

Squall is not a good leader.

Squall had depth as a character, unlike a number of other main protagonists.

Think about it, he was orphaned and left by his closest friend. He didn't want anyone to get close to him again, so he threw up a cold cover over his inner self.

He never chose to be a leader, that was forced upon him. Several times. It's not like he ran around saying "I wanna be leader! Pick me!" is it?

He was trained to be a fighter, and he was trained well I think (actually watch him during Renzokuken or Lionheart). And he was a mercenary, since that's all SeeDs are.

I have more points than that, but i'm tired and lazy, so you'll have to wait =]

Just FYI, I'm ok with you defending the character in this topic. By all means, feel free to post. Just don't expect to get "nice" replies. I think the Lewis Black joke is something like "If a gay person is in a bar and some redneck stands up and says 'I don't want none of them queers coming in here', the gay person is usually smart enough not to stand up and go 'hey, how ya doing?'". Get the point? I mean... you're just dancing into the line of fire here but whatever.

I don't expect any "nice" replied either. But surely you had to expect SOMEONE to defend him, right? You can't make a topic like this without someone stepping in and debating the fact ^^

Mercenaries are generally badass and cool.

Joshua from Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones he was cool and a merc.

Mercs are cool, not blubbering Vaginas.

Meh, I happen to like Squall too. (Don't kill me!) Why do I love his character so much? Because of his attitude. I admit, there's times that he annoyed me (just slight) because he wouldn't do certain things...like...oh, at the Ragnarok. Rinoa asked for a kiss or something and he turned down! What the heck is up with that?! Gaaah.

Anyway, I still like him though. Mostly his personality, not his actions. He can be rude, yes...but so what?

Aren't we all sometimes? Hmm, I didn't like him as a boy though. His yellow shirt irked me. And he was a crybaby.
But look at him now. I'd hardly call him a crybaby. Just a guy who doesn't really like to show his emotions.

Ok, I think that's enough for now.

He was just afraid to let anyone get close to him. After Ellone left, he felt sad, betrayed and alone. He didn't want to feel like that again, so he didn't let anyone get close to him. That's why he was all cold to Rinoa.
