Did Squall change too fast?
Did you feel Squall changed his personality too fast? I myself thought he changed dramatically in the last ten minutes of disk 2 / start of disk 3. i thought he changed from "OMG I Hate JOO Rinoa" to "OMFG I LUVS JOO Rinoa!" in like...3 seconds.
I can't remember all too well though, so...what do you think?

yeah i would probably say that he did change pretty damn quick. but things were also happening around him very quickly. i mean one second rinoa's a spunky teenage girl, and the next time he sees the girl he's starting to get close to, she's cold, lifeless, and in a coma. and theres almost nothing he can do about it. i guess it was a pretty dramatic experience, a life-changing one at that.

Squall changed? What? His gender maybe. I can't really say I saw too much of a serious change in Squall in that game in general. If you mean for his opinion of Rinoa, definitely. He want from screaming about kooties to putting his life on the line for her. I constantly hear people talking about how Final Fantasy VIII was a great love story and I've yet to see it. Honestly when I think of Squall this is the Family Guy scene I think of:

At many times, it felt like Squall would never change at all... He'd go for long streches of dialogue without saying anything meanful at all, and there'd be so much crap going on. So perhaps it was meant to be fast. He was an emotional kid, so clamming up and shutting everyone out wasn't his natural bahavior originally...
It would make sense to me if all the events that were happening in his life would just pile up to the point of his realizing he had been stupid all that time. In times of stress and anxiety I've seen peoples personalities change jsut as quickly. So it almost humanizes him for me.

I honestly don't know...can't remember much about it. But from what I do remember, I suppose he did change quite a bit, although it wasn't as drastic. I knew he was slowly falling for her...probably liked her ever since the dance started, but he kept pushing people away, remember? Not just Rinoa, but Quistis too, and several others. That's just his personality. He didn't want people to get closer to him.
But he had a change of heart when Rinoa was in danger and the thought of losing her forever didn't appeal to him. So off he went to rescue her. Simple as that. So I really don't think his feelings change drastically...just his actions.

His choice in actions change drastically in Disc Three, but his emotions can be seen gradually turning over to Rinoa throughout the first two discs. The best example of this is after the concert Rinoa puts up (specifically the "slow dance" option where Rinoa runs away all boo-hoo) - he displays a wish to remain alone and stoic, but it is clear by his hesitance that he does in fact want to reach out.

I'd say he bottled up the change for a while, which is why it came so rapidly. It was only when she ended up in a deep sleep that he came to realise how he felt. He didn't admit it to the others, yet to himself he was willing to. He was willing to accept in his heart that he didn't hate her.
Maybe the resentment early on was because he liked her. He wanted to reject her and feared developing feelings because he knew that she wouldn't be there forever, even if she were to disappear after many years. Then when she almost disappeared he realised that he had to accept his feelings. He realised that it was better to show them before it was too late than hide them.

I feel that Squall did change too fast yet I didn't see it as a problem because his feelings (in my opinion) built up inside of him throughout the entire game

I think Squall bottled up his feelings for Rinoa and thats why you may think he changes quickly as he finally shows how he really feels for her.
If he had changed his feelings on disk 1, then yeah I would agree. But by the end of the 2nd disk, Squall was releasing his feelings for her.
