i only really depended on them when i was fightin Diablo and also when i was in Ultimacia's castle, i got the GF command back and then used them to get the rest of the commands i needed back

I don't do the Tonberry King thing until I have the Lion Heart, usually... though this time around, I did it with just the Punishment (which I got early on in disc 2, while on level 18, lol).
