Stealing Huge Materia
I never quite understood this.
I'll lay it all out to see if I'm missing something.
1. Meteor is summoned and will kill most everything on the Planet.
2. Shinra, an evil corporation, goes around collecting Huge Materia.
3. The reason for this is to put the Huge Materia into a rocket and then launch the rocket into Meteor in hopes of destroying it and saving the world.
4. The heroes, for no reason that is stated as far as I remember, go around and start stealing the Huge Materia.
5. The rocket is thus less powerful when it crashes into Meteor.
Whether it would work or not is irrelevant because the "good guys" were purposefully destroying an option for saving humanity for...no reason.

I think due to Shinra being the bad guys for most of the story line so far, the heroes assume (incorrectly) that they are collecting the huge Materia for reasons that are less than pure.

well the only real reason for the hero's of the game to steal the Huge materia is in the script, If they had any common sense they would think "well hang on If sephiroth is trying to destroy the planet, won't everyone else be trying to save it"

Also if meteor was destroyed by shinra avalanche wouldn't be able to save the world, and so wouldn't be the heroes. Also cloud wouldn't be able to fight Sepheroith and we can't have that.
Also I think they wanted master summon/magic/command and BahamutZERO. Just to be badass.
They probably asumed that they were going to use it as fuel or as a weapon.
Now that I think about it, they didn't really have much point in doing anything since they got out of midgar. Following sepheroith just because SHINRA are also doing so. Then revenge in the beggining of disc 2. Then the buisiness with the huge materia. Then they get back on track.

They basically thought that because such Materia would hold so much power, it would be bad to have the Shinra have possession of them. I think a bit of dialog got chopped during the translation but thats pretty much the gist of it.
It's a bit of a nod to the older FF's too, like collecting the four Crystals n'such.

I think they say as such whilst on the rocket, or at least they begin to question why they took it when they just wanted to destroy meteor. After all they were just after the same thing. The buffoons. Altho I seriously doubt the rocket would have worked anyway and that would of just been a waste of materia
