I like the notion of it being attached to him. It heightens the idea of Vincent being supernatural as well as adding to his own internal conflicts about his humanity.
Here are the possibilities as I see it:
a) It's a gauntlet that is attached to Vincent as a replacement for an arm and is controlled using some kind of biomechanical tomfoolery.
b) Vincent has a normal arm underneath the gauntlet, but the gauntlet is somehow permanently embedded into him.
c) It's detachable and Vincent has a perfectly good arm underneath.
d) It's detachable, but Vincent has an afflicted arm underneath.
e) It's detachable, but Vincent has no arm underneath, and it serves as a functional prosthetic.
