My favorite combination of materia is...Final Attack and Phoenix. Basically before you die, it will allow you to perform an attack, and then with Phoenix combined, you will be revived and fully cured, and the enemy also suffers fire damage. I found it to be very useful!

at LEAST 2 mastered HP and MP plus on each character, as well as Magic Plus on my spellcaster, Luck Plus on who ever has deathblow.
