The 'fire' at Nibelheim
OK, i dont wanna make myself look silly or anythin ere lol.. but although I've played and completed this game numerous times I still get confused with the storyline. I get most of it, but what really confuses me is when we learn that Nibelheim was burned down and destroyed when Sephiroth learned of his true fate.. and I'm sure this fire did actually happen didnt it..? I mean it was referred to numerous times during the game, and even in Advent Children..
so..
why is it, that when Cloud and Co. return to Nibelheim for the 1st time, do all the locals deny any fire having happened in the last 5 years?
did it not actually happen? am I just lost? Please helllp!

Now that you talk about it, it does kinda confuse me aswell. Perhaps they are lying about it to forget all about there past. Or maybe this was just something that cloud made up in his mind.

The locals work for Shinra, they rebuilt the town and acted like nothing happened. A nice big government conspiracy
*Edit* Have a look in Tifa's room, there are letters on the dressing table explaining what happened

The locals were replaced by people from ShinRa, and they were paid to deny any fire or any strangeness that ever happened. ShinRa wanted to silence the Nibelhelm incident, and went as far to pay people to act as though they had always lived there.
The fire still happened, but ShinRa rebuilt the town, and noone who was around for the fire still lives there.

I think only Zangan survived, and he took Tifa to Midgar to get her healed up after getting hit by Sephiroth. All the others, I think they must have died or become Sephy clones as you say, Hojo does like his experiments

Read the letters on Tifa's desk and also watch Last Order. Explains everything.
The town was burned down. Shortly after, Hojo and his team turned up and captured any survivors (which includes Cloud and Zack). The survivors ended up being the experients in Hojo's plan to make a Sephiroth 'Clone' and ended up as the wandering Black Caped goons. Only Zangan escaped with Tifa and went to Midgar to find a decent doctor to make her better after her run-in with Sephiroth. Hojo ordered that the town was to be restored exactly and installed Shinra employees to help cover up the incident.

What always bothered me was the the Hojo experiment subject who lived in Sector Five Slums. There was no explanation for that person's presence there. Any ideas?

That always bugged me as well. I think it might have been foreshadowing since he has the tattoo on his arm, but it's annoying how they never said anything about him at all.

Thats a good point. Another is why the Sephiroth you follow about (whos really Jenova) also has a number on his hand. It's mentioned by Dio and I think Cloud as well at some other point. Why would he have a tattoo personally?....
