How is Cloud a "nerd"?

I don't believe in labels but this is a legitimate question. The more forums I go to; the more I see that Cloud is labeled as a "nerd". How does he fit that stereotype?

I even see the ranting on web pages (Take a look):

I can see why from that author's perspective but do a variety of you feel that way? And drop the "emo" jokes; that's been overdone. I am just curious myself on how he coined such a label. He may be antisocial but he doesn't fit that realm IMO.

I would never consider or call Cloud a 'nerd', but I've often referred to him as a bit of a dork (especially in the game...there's not to much 'dorky-ness' in AC), but because of the way he acts sometimes.

Like when he says stuff like, "Let's mosey", or when he cross dressed, or just they way he says things. For example, I think even Aeris made fun of him at one point and she said something along the lines of," That sounds like something Cloud would say, 'It's to dangerous', 'I can't get you involved' blah blah blah" (I'm paraphrasing of course cause my memory isn't that good).

But I've never used the term 'dork' to describe him in a negative matter though honestly =o So maybe this isn't what you're talking about ^^;

Emo and nerd arent Cloud IMO. I see him as a kinda loner type, yet he has some love for those around him and feels, eg when Aeris died, he felt gulity.

I don't think of Cloud as a Nerd or Dork. He say's the oddest of thing's in the game now and again mind you and in AC he seem's really depressed.

But that doesn't make him an Emo, IMO he's depressed in AC because he has GeoStigma and there is no known cure for it, so he's trying to deal with the fact that he may die, ect.

Mind you in the Northern Cavern he said something pretty stupid which never went with the moment so maybe that's why ...

Cloud is not a nerd. He looks that way because of his past and his personality, but considering what he gets done in that game, and the amount of people he gets to follow him (especially if you get the hidden characters) he is deffinatly cool in my book

Cloud is about as far from a nerd as you can get, what idiot would ever think that he was a nerd? o_O

As for being emo...he's only emo in AC, and frankly, i think AC ruined his character. So he's got fancier clothes and he's doing product placement for phones. Whoop-dee-fuckin-doo, i dont care. He even contradicts his character from the game.

Game Cloud: "we need to let go of Aerith's memory so she can join the planet"

AC Cloud: "omg aerith waaah, it's all my fault you're dead, i'm seeing visions of you, waaaaah"

Neither Cloud: owns a pocket protector

Thanks for the input everyone. I knew I wasn't alone in this belief. It's just it's becoming more often that I see Cloud referred to as the "nerd" or pseudo hero when I go to forums.

I always wondered how people could summarize his archetype with the label "nerd". To me, Cloud was just antisocial and jaded. I never saw him as "the nerd".

it's really fucking annoying to hear what i think is the best video game character of all time being dismissed as a nerd.

You only have to look at games like Mario and Link (from Zelda).

Mario is an Italian Plumber and Link is an Elf with pointy ears. They still make good characters and heroes.

Mario rarely speaks and the game storylines are linear. Link has never spoken in a game, and the storyline is also rather linear.

Cloud is the truest hero in a videogame because he has a huge dialogue and script in the story. Dismissing him as a 'nerd' is so wrong because a nerd is supposed to be someone on the computer alot etc. Cloud is never even shown on a computer. He's a top S.O.L.D.I.E.R etc

anyone who can use a sword that big after being stabbed in his sholder
some invariable number of times by Sephiroth's massive long sword. anyone who says that can't have gotten past "clouds coma", anyone
who can go through that mental strain is by no means a nerd
