I've always felt VII was too hyped, but I can understand why it was as such. I mean everybody was excited about it at the time. It had a great story and good characters, and the story's context was well above it's genre for the time since it easily set the standard to what a good RPG should be like.

However with that said, VII isn't my favorite (VIII is simply because it's more realistic to me). I've played Zelda before as well, and honestly....it doesn't compare to any Final Fantasy game to my knowledge (at least when it comes to story). Just my opinion though.

Where to begin...

The game isn't overrated because it certainly delivers.

-Excellent story
-An interesting cast of characters
-A user base friendly system
-A Hefty amount of gameplay and replayability

For it's time...

Even today it's hailed as one of the greatest RPG's of all time, but compare it to todays standard RPG it's considered sub par at best.

It's a wonderful game and it's one of my favorites. Square decided to capitalize on it's popularity and offer more from it's original story. Naturally we the gamer accepted their offerings without hesitation. With it's success Square decided to continue to capitalize on it's renown title.

With that said we now have four completely separate stories based on the original, and still there are more in development, and it seems to be losing its steam because now we're growing tired of being spoon fed the same thing, and with that in mind the games success and popularity it's being labeled overrated by most.

That's my thoughts.

I think Advent Children has made this game highly over rated.

Before, Final Fantasy VII was really just known by gamers. People thought the game was great, and they liked to discuss various theories regarding the game, but that was it.

Then AC came out, and people watched the movie after hearing the game was great. They claimed the movie was the greatest thing ever regardless if they even understood the story. Fangirls hailed Cloud as the hottest video game character and there was an explosion of god awful cosplays of Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, Yuffie, Aerith, and Vincent. Most of these people didn't even recognize people that cosplayed the characters from the original game.

Ugh and all the bootlegged merchandise that showed up at cons... You couldn't go to a single vendors table with out seeing something FFAC related.

Then some people tried to play the original game but then whined about the graphics and stopped quickly... but still claimed that FF7 was the greatest game ever.

So they moved on to FF10, and we got an explosion of god awful Yuna, Lulu, Rikku, Auron, Paine and sometime Tidus cosplayers...

So yes AC was bad for FF7

FF7 on it's own is a great game though.

I don’t think VII is overrated; I think it is a monumental game worthy of all the praise it has received.

Granted, games with better graphics have been released and compared to them the graphics of VII feel dated, but I think the graphics, outdated as they may be, still hold up quite well and the FMVs even more so. The graphical style of the game is very nicely done and still good to look at despite the game being over 10 years old. And taking into account it's age...I think it is rather unfair to criticize the game's graphics by using today's games as the standard. For their time, the graphics were jaw-dropping and among the best in the system.

Games with better sound quality have also been released, and ones which have used full orchestras in their soundtrack, unlike VII; which is not to say that their soundtracks are better than VII’s (I don’t think so), but that they have a fuller sound. But neither graphics nor sound alone are what make this game a masterpiece, it is in something that can be achieved apart from these things where VII truly excels and where it’s true charm lies: story, characters, pacing, game play, etc.

That’s where the magic is and after all these years this is basically all that remains and will remain of VII (unless there is a remake, in which case the graphics and sound would rise to new heights). These things are more than enough for it to soar head and shoulders above all others. New games may have better graphics and sound, but in my mind, they have yet to top VII in the other more important things.

FF7 is only overrated to people who haven't taken the time to play through it with a mind of it being more than a game. Because as just a game it lacks, but as an entertainment package its great.

A note slightly off, remake? Now that's hype.

FFVII is pretty overrated in my opinion, I'll admit the story and game play is pretty good but it kinda fell short of my expectations. With the way people were carrying on about it I thought I would be in for the best game of all time, but quite honestly it didn't compare to some of the other FF's I had played such as IX, X and VI.
