I'm currently playing through FFVII for the first time. The only games I'd played before it were IV,IX and III. All of which have a medieval style.I thought it being futuristic was a nice change of pace. I could hardly believe my eyes when the first enemies I fought were using machine guns.

(I did know it was a futuristsic game, but it still seemed weird).
As for the plot, I loved all of it when you're inside Midgar. Unfortunately since I've left Midgar everything's going really slow. I'm currently at the place with all the mountains and railtrack after the 'costa del sol' bit. The plot at the moment is basically 'follow the Sephiroth'. I've noticed that Square likes to use this sort of thing as a plot filler. I'm thinking of the bit in IX where you follow Kuja without knowing what he's up to.
Hopefully though the plot will get back to it's former exctingness like it was back in Midgar.
As for the battle system, it's very similar to IX. Except that you equip the abilities (called 'Materia') onto slots on the items. Generally, the better the item the more slots there are. And you have to have the abilities equipped to use/benefit from them. It's a very good system but I still prefer the one in IX.
Overall, I would recommend it. If you're a FF fan you've got to play VII, even if it's just to form an opinion on it.
Ok, so you haven't
got to but you know what I mean.
