Final Fantasy VI aka III was the very first FF I played as well. I played it for the SNES. I barrowed it from a friend and just couldn't put it down. It was my first RPG as well. I played and played, but never completed it. Then as time went on Final Fantasy VII came out and I picked that up. It was a great game, but I missed FFIII. It was then re released for PS as FF Anthology. Twas a great day. Great package. Final Fantasy VI is the greatest Final Fantasy hands down.

FFVI (III) was my favorite. Ive played FFI, II, VI, VII, IX, X, XI (actually-i quit), and currently playing XII. The only reason why i had time to type this is cuz im auto-leveling. (;
I first got FFVI (III) as a gift, then had to buy a SNES to play it on. That same night I somehow discovered the Vanish/X-Zone thing and thoroughly beat it the next day. Because of that glaring loophole in the game, the impact of the storyline stood out and the contrast of the characters/villians meshed so well. I actually began to care about them. (Laugh-your s'posed to).
No Final Fantasy, before or since, left me with an equal feeling of satisfaction and desire to replay.
The best heroes and the best villians.

FFVI is definitely in my top three. It did have great characters, and it was easy to get absorbed in the story line. I think a part of this was the difficulty and involvement in some of the battles. FFVI was harder than some of the later games. It's hard to forget a boss fight when it took 20 minutes to complete. Normally I'd assume such a large cast of characters would begin to blend together over time, but each always stayed unique in my mind, probably because everyone had his or her own mini-quest at some point in the game.

You could split FFVI in two. The the World of Balance half is more linear and develops the main plotline. The World of Ruin gives the player a lot more freedom and focuses on individual character development.

I loved how FFVI offered such a huge cast that came together beautifully. They all came from different background yet had one goal: to take down the Empire and then bring balance back to the world. (Though Mog, Umaro and Gogo are somewhat questionable.) It's like weaving different people into one strand or something.

FFVI seemed to be the culmination of what made the past Final Fantasy games great into one. It was what I considered the height of the FF series. FF6 was really a fun and memorable game to play. I especially loved those funny scenes. What I'm trying to say is that it was a very good blend though it had it's fair shares of problems.

The supporting cast also made this game great. Also, the musical arrangement was another thing that made this game awesome. To date, I think this game has one of the best musical score ever. For a 2D game, this game seemed to have it's very own theatrical opening with Terra, Biggs and Wedge marching towards Narshe. Having said all that, I considered this one of the best if not the best 2D RPG game on the SNES!

What about the latest FF games? They're good but if FFVI was totally remade in 3D, I'll bet it'll kick serious butt.

I was just thinking the same thing. FF7 is my favorite, but 6 is close up there. I wonder if FF7 was originally released on the SNES and FF6 was originally released on PS if I'd feel the same way. The 3D and 32-bit graphics from 7 were very refreshing and were a huge jump.

But yeah, I think they should re-re-release 6 (like they did with 3 on the DS) as a 3D game, that'd be amazing. And then re-release 7 for PS2 or 3, that'd make my day.

I completely forgot to mention the music in my post. Awakening, Terra and Relm are three of my favorite songs in all of Final Fantasy (in that order).
