I think people have to remember that final fantasy V was lost in translation. A lot of the weak character developments and odd resolutions plot sequencing were due to bad translation. I'm assuming most everyone on this site has played the american versions either released on the playstation as anthology or on the advance? although i've never played the jap version, i hear it's pretty damn good. one of the best, actually.

another thing that a lot of people forget, is that this final fantasy is a classic. not saying that that automatically makes it good, but that it's the way final fantasy was originally intended to be. strangely enough, we all need to remember that final fantasy VII (the one everyone holds as a standard) was a deviation from the style of the original series.

Final Fantasy V was one of the best. It had a brilliant job system, with lots of paths to chose for your characters. It had a moving death scene. It had a brilliant world in which it was set.. or two, or three if you count the merge.

This game also introduced a great cast of characters. Lets not forget that it introduced the character Gilgamesh who not only gave us one of the best battle themes in FF history, but also one of the best recurring characters. I find Gilgamesh particulary interesting, as his appearances in other games may well be the same bloke in more than one occasion.. His appearance in FF8 for example places him as a lost swordsman being lost in dimensions following the climax of FFV.

Well the Gilgamesh in FFIX is the Alleyway Jack I think from the begining, and by my judgement is probably a different character.

But the FF8 GF by his appearance seems to have jumped straight out of FFV, and his speech seems to support this, perhaps as an inside joke that he is lost and cant find the right dimensional portal in the N-Zone to return back to the world of FFV.

What he says when he appears for the first time in FF8 during the fight with Seifer:

(Odin dies, Gilgamesh is seen grabbing Odins sword... Later in the battle, the party dissapear and Gilgamesh appears).
"You gave me the 4th one..." (In reference to him grabbing Odins sword following the death of Odin)
"Huh? Was it you?"
"Then dodge my sword!"
"Eat this!!!"
(Attacks Seifer, blows him away etc)
"Where is the dimensional interval?!"
(Runs off).

Also... While he hasnt appeared in FFVII, or FFX, he does appear in FFXII, and the fact that he has collected copies of swords from both these worlds and more suggests that he could possibly have travelled through dimensional portals to those worlds also at some point. FFXII's Gilgamesh could possibily be the FFV Gilgamesh, though it is not to say for sure, but it makes sense.

I'm not sayign conclusively that it is the same Gilgamesh, just that it is a possibility, and I'd love to see where they go with the idea of a character who can pretty much pop up in any game, and be the same character!

EDIT - Oh yeah, sorry. I am 99% possitive that he was not in FF6. But I think in the Game Boy Advance remake they might have added him as a bonus esper, I'm not sure as I havent played that version.

that is definitely one hell of a theory. i like it. it is definitely awesome to see that gilgamesh could be the same gilgamesh ya know? like if the N-Zone is like a dimensional rift...maybe like all the different final fantasy worlds are different dimensions? i know they use different names for the worlds right? gaia, terra, spira....are there any others? but like what if the N-Zone is the common denominator? like gilgamesh is just travelling from world to world. too bad he doesn't show up in some...that would totally make this theory concrete.

gilgamesh is a norse god right? my mythology is kinda rusty..."epic of gilgamesh"?

Gilgamesh is a Sumerian epic. He was king of Uruk (probably translates to some areas of modern day Iraq).

His freind in the epic Enkidu, a tamed wild man, who travels with him until his death. In the Final Fantasy series Gilgamesh also has various mosnter sidekicks called Enkidu, but probably are used as a homage to the myth rather than anythign else, as the forms of these monsters varies.

And yeah I'd love Gilgamesh to appear in more games, and I'd love that theory to be true, and if not, I'd love them to notice it and make it true! I think it's a good idea to have them all linked by some interdimensional portals of some kind that some people may pass through, so long as they don't overdo it.

In fact.. Gilgamesh could become the FF equivalent of Doctor Who, travelling through different dimensions onto different worlds and time zones, at random but as he tries to find his way home. . Could make a good story.

Enkidu is a dog in FFXII, but a dragon type creature in FFV I think, but he only appears breifly for one battle as far as I remember.

And hell yeah would I play a Gilgamesh game! I'd love that. If they were to do a new spin-off FF game that would be one of the main ones I'd like to see. It would be a valid excuse to revisit many of the FF worlds in various time zones, and perhaps to visit some new ones, all linked with a relatively good story of him trying to find his way home... Or not, as he might enjoy his travels eventually and learn to enjoy the new swords and warriors he is coming into contact with, and always willing for a challenge. However they do it, I'm sure a Gilgamesh game would be brilliant.
