I think that FFIX is actually a contrast to the opening of say FFVII. That's a game that throws you in at the start right into the action, with not much explanation. FFIX sets its stall out more, giving you some background info about what's going on. It's probably the least confusing opening I've seen in the series in many ways.
Both approaches to the opening work well in different ways anyway.

I always knew it was a play.
I like IX:s beginning. It was nice that you could play with all main characters in the first hour and it kept you wandering how they all will meet.
I loved the beginning and it's what got me hooked on FF games. I knew it was a play simply because it's mentioned so many times throughout the first 20 minutes of the game: Queen Brahne, Baku, Puck to Vivi, Zidane and the rest of Tantalus (I mean, that was their job besides being thieves).

Lol, same here! But yeah I knew what was going on at the start, I wasnt confused. It was a great way of starting the game off and I loved the mini sword fighting game.

I can't say I mistook the characters in the play for genuine playable characters. I knew it was a play because -well- I actually read the text before that happened.
Wasn't as climactic as some of the other installations' entries, but it was already.

I didnt find the beginning confusing at all and I quite enjoyed it. It was definitely one of the most fun beginnings to a FF game...actually the whole first disc is fantastic, it does an excellent job of pulling you right into the game.

Didn't confuse me one bit. I mean, they tell exactly what the plan is on the Prima Vista.

It let you play as 3 of the 4 main characters and had a great way of showing their differences.
It did a pretty good job of explaining what was going on and I wasn't confused at all. In response to the Medeo doing no damage thing, I tried it once, did 0 damage and then just started normal attacking
