The Name Zidane
My title rhymes!
lol Holy hell, I walked away from this post for a few minutes and when I came back I almost hit "Submit New Thread". lol That one line would've been the whole topic....
Does Zidane's name stick out of the series? Like a lot? Terra refers to the earth. Cloud... to clouds. Squall... to storms and Richard Simons. Tidus to the sun and so on and so forth. Heck, even Vaan refers to wind somehow. My point is that Zidane doesn't really refer to anything at all. And it's also the only name I've ever heard as a real person's name:
"Wine and Dine" Zinedine Zidane, the soccer player

So where do you think they got the inspiration for this name? It certainly couldn't be from the soccer player, could it?

That's one of the funniest gifs I've ever seen xD
I have no idea where the name comes from though. I never usually look into the names too much, but some are obvious (Squall namely)
I don't actually know what meaning the name has come to think of it...

this is seriously doubted, but maybe they didn't intend for any of the names to mean anything, the beggning names didn't really stand for anything, so why not??

Maybe they'd been watching the football as Zidane's a big icon in japan?

Good picture! To be honest, I dunno. Perhaps they wanted a name not referring to anything at all?

I found this mentioned on origins' of FF characters names on an FF-info site:
"Several people have sent me the name of a popular French soccer player named Zinedine Zidane. I'm extremely skeptical that Square would base one of their main characters on an actual person, though. Ebony opines: "For me it's coming from "gitan" (a french word meaning gipsy) and "tzigane" (this one also exists in English). In RPG, the gitan class is close to the thief class, so it fairly fits for FF9's main character. Also Tribal alludes to how the gipsys live (in tribes), and Zidane is also living with a band." A note from ShinyMasamune: I was messing around with anagrams, and I discovered that "Zidane Tribal" can be rearranged to "Lazier Bandit". Probably not at all relevant, yet a fun and striking coincidence "
So not much info there, but that's a suggestion - I'm a big football fan and it would be amusing if he had been named after Zinedine Zidane, but I don't think that's the case.

Actually, Zidane might refer to something. A "gita" (meaning gipsy in French) and "tzigane". It'll explain all in a dictionary, just in case you're wondering. Anyway, in RPG, the gitan class is close to the thief class, and well, Zidane is one heck of a thief, isn't he? "Kidnapping a princess" indeed. Also, Tribal refers to how gipsys live in tribes, and Zidane is also living with a band, yes?
