The four armed man only tells you your treasure hunter rank. Your card ranking is on the card menu screen.
I didn't know you could train up your cards. My Madeen has an X (it was like that when I got it) and also my Ark got one as well.
To sort this all out I've looked at an FAQ. And it's worse than you think.

-All of your cards have to be not X but A. :(

-
You have to have all the cards but every card you have has to have a completely different combination of arrows.

You get 15 points for each card you have that has a unique combination of arrows (compared to the rest of your cards) and extra 2 points if that card is an A card. So you can have 17 points for each card and if you have this for every card then it's 1700 points. Which is the maximum.

The highest rank is Master by the way. Which you have to have at least 1698 points to get. ( So you can have one card that isn't A ).

Ah i got it, you have to get every card in the game with an A in the code. And every card has to a different arrow combination compared to any of the others

Yes. The A has to be the type. e.g. 0A00. It doesn't make a difference if the attack (A000) or defense (00A0 / 000A) is an A.
Type A is the best you can get. Not only does it attack the defending card's lowest number (any number) but it uses the highest number on the attacking card.
If you've managed to keep using a card until it turns into an X card, you'll have to use it a further twice as much to make it an A card. Hard work...

I don’t remember them being called ranks, rather I think they where called collectors levels, but I could be wrong.

Either way, I believe the levels are as follows… (Someone correct me if wrong)

000 - 299 : Beginner
300 - 399 : Novice

400 - 499 : Player

500 - 599 : Senior

600 - 699 : Fan

700 - 799 : Leader

800 - 899 : Coach

900 - 999 : Advisor

1000 - 1099 : Director

1100 - 1199 : Dealer

1200 - 1249 : Trader

1250 - 1299 : Commander

1300 - 1319 : Doctor

1320 - 1329 : Professor

1330 - 1339 : Veteran

1340 - 1349 : Freak

1350 - 1359 : Champion

1360 - 1369 : Analyst

1370 - 1379 : General

1380 - 1389 : Expert
1390 - 1399 : Shark
1400 - 1449 : Specialist
1450 - 1474 : Elder
1475 - 1499 : Dominator
1500 - 1549 : Maestro
1550 - 1599 : King

1600 - 1649 : Wizard

1650 - 1679 : Authority

1680 - 1689 : Emperor

1690 - 1697 : Pro

1698 - Up : Master

I did get all the way up to Master, only because I have to do 100% of everything in a FF.

I know but it's still a rank, even if it's not called that. Those levels are right too. I'm a freak now.

My more common rank is Champion, but when I assert myself I'll get as far as Emperor. I always lose enthusiasm after a while. I'll most likely try for Master rank eventually though.

I now have every card except the Viltgance. I am also a shark now. Which is a bit freaky but still less freakier than a freak.

I have been looking at my cards and lot of them have things like "M" or "P" eg (1P10) on them, what does this mean?

That is the type of the card. P does a physical attack, M does a Magical, X attacks the lowest defense number, and A attacks the lowest number on the card (even if it's the attack number) with the highest number on it's card(even if it's a defense number).
The first number after the type is the physical defense and the second is the magical defense(might be the other way around, correct me if I'm wrong). Which is why there are different types.
The first number is the attack.

so your example 1P10. Will do a physical attack of 1. It has a physical defense of 1 and a Magical defense of 0. The confusing thing is that even if a high attack number attacks a low defense number then the defending card could still win. I don't understand that part but there's some sort of random element to it.
And the NPCs tell you to work all this out on your own...
