Speaking of too many playable characters... I think the more the merrier. Has anyone played Chrono Cross? If you have, then you know what I mean. Even though I guess that game kind of tanked... I loved it! LIke 20-30 characters.
As far as beatrix... I think she should have been a playable character. And maybe when you form a party with her a steiner the Sword Mag becomes something between the two of them(beatrix and steiner). Like... Double Shock-Break Damage Limit-Save The Queen!! (all one move btw)

Yea, I don't think that Steiner should have died... but I'm suprised she wasn't. I remember playing through the game and being convinced that she was going to be a secret character but it never happened. I don't think it should ever be added in the case of a port or a remake, but it was sort of disappointing you never got to play as her.

maybe if she joined after the events of the disc 2 other wise that would totally change the storyline

That would be amazing, to have to different storylines based on a decision to let beatrix join or not. Or something along those lines... I think you seen what I mean.

I would have loved to have her as part of the party. Maybe make Steiner the monk character and her the knight. Or she could have just completely replaced Quina and have her still be able to use her sword but also have her be able to learn Blue magic.

Nah, just because I liked hwo she came in as a uber strong character comapred to the rest of your party, and it's kind of like when you get to play as Seymour in FFX. He's got some great strength in Magic and even attacks, but it's just a taste of it, not the whole entree.
I liked her as a guest character but no more. You don't always want "too much of a good thing."

She is basically like steiner so it would be like having 2 steiners, but i thought she was used well in the game
