...they must be changing the characters to suit their current pop culture...I mean, look at some of the bands they have. I can tell who's a guy and who isn't, but my fiancee has trouble guessing.

I never really mistook Zidane for a girl. Sure, he had relatively long hair, but his lack of female presence stood out. That... and his male identity was spread all over the game from the first instance you play as him. I highly doubt they'd have a female character getting horny over another female on a Final Fantasy game. ;p
Not a hard detail to miss...

When you play the game, you tend to get involved with the characters, and realise whether any of them are gay.
Those scenes were just faggy, and riddled with fail. Stereotypical teen-girls who prance around in warm water. As for the massage scene... well, my brother thought I was making them have anal sex. xD (he didn't know it was a female on top).
