I did some research about the topic...so far, I couldn't find any confirmation about the rumor. I didn't even see any rumors of the like. =/ I'm still playing FFIV, and from what I gathered, it is really impossible to defeat Kain. However, I can't say the same to those who actually leveled up A LOT and faced him then. But really, the game's purpose is to have Kain win that particular battle to continue on with the thickening plot.

Well...the game did intend for the player to lose that battle, so I'm going to have to say no, at least from a storyline perspective. By that I mean that it's probably a scripted battle, so even if someone DID manage to deplete Kain's HP to 0, the resulting cutscene would still treat it as if Cecil had lost. I mean...Cecil's attacks did do damage to him, which means they might've given him a maximum HP. Still, I'm willing to bet that it's some ridiculously high number (at least within the context of FFIV), thus eliminating any chance of emerging victorious in the first place. Besides, if someone DID powerlevel enough to defeat Kain, don't you think it would be on Youtube or something by now?
...
*runs off to Youtube* Nope, nothing. So, from a logical standpoint, I'd have to say that there's no way to beat Kain.

Yeah, otherwise there would be similar questions over managing to overpower Ceciol's dark knight form. These battles are designed for the player to lose, if you managed to beat a character without effort and they join you with massive boosts to their skills it would just contradict the storyline if there was no reason as to why they had gained such power just by joining your party. To get back on topic though I also say no, the game mechanics have probably designed Kain to be unbeatable in this battle.

Geez...Let's see, here...30x9999=299,970, though I did that in my head, so it's probably a bit off. Still, I'm thinking it's safe to assume that Cain is, in fact, unbeatable.

Yeah I'm fairly certain that it is impossible to defeat him I've tried to powerlevel but it takes a long time at where you are and I still lost anyway
I like the fact that Kain defeats you in the story just seems cool even tho he's being used
