Look at the other games the DS has to offer, there are many other great games for it besides FFVIII.
All I can say is that its worth it. Its great to finally play the game as the UK never got a release. The DS is great full stop because its great for long journeys and interaction.

It's a thuroughly awesome game, but it's not going to suit your FFVII jones. It's not similar to VII at all. III is a job system game (similar to FFV, FFXI, and FFX-2), which puts leveling and everything in an a different spectrum. In spite of heavy additions, the storyline is not very deep. Four kids get chosen by the crystals and have to go raise medieval hell in order to save the world. But at least the four main characters are characters now. There's alot of charm in simplicity, though, and FFIII is a good example of that.
I recommend you get it, and I recommend you do NOT use VII as a frame of reference. III DS is a very rich and fun version of one of the most influential FFs.
