I always used a black and a red mage, black for black magic and red for healing and occasional black magic.
In the final battle I had Sage, Summoner, Ninja, and I think Viking.

By the end-game you wont need a Magus, as damage output is easily matched by melee attacks. However, using a Sage instead of a Devout is just silly. Devouts have FAR superior MP-usage. Sages may be able to use all magic, but they cannot us it that much. I think you may be able to cast Arise/Holy/Tornado 2/3 times by the end-game, whereas a Devout can cast them 5/6 times, and Arise is a MUST for end-game boss battles.
It's the same with a Summoner, really. They're not needed by end-game. Melee damage can easily match summon-damage.
However, all four characters as mages would indeed be a challenge. I may try it one day

Hmm, I'm actually debating whether to keep continue using a Red Mage. I haven't gotten the final set of classes yet, but when I do, I'm thinking that I'll definitely stick with...
Dark Knight
Dragoon (or Summoner)
Ninja
Devout
...Something like that.

I think in pretty much every FF game i make sure that i have atleast one mage (most likly a white mage) because i usually go full out and enemies end up doing big damage so i tend to need a healer. If i dont have one i use potions but then that can become expensive. So if you keep one mage that heals you should be good.

I only use only one Devout. I also use a Summoner for group damage and Magic damage. The other two are a Dragoon and a Ninja.
At the start of the game, mages are stronger, but as the conclusion draws near, Physical Classes do much more damage.

My First party was:
Warrior Luneth
White Mage Arc
Black Mage Refia (She performed admirably)
Warrior Ingus
Now, my party is:
Knight Luneth
Black Mage Arc (soon to be changed)
Geomancer Refia
Knight Ingus
I can't get past The Water Temple or whatever it's called, the Kraken takes no prisoners and even my Thundara has limited effect! My characters are all about Lv. 21; what should I do?

Your team screams WHITE MAGE please!, hehe, you need a better healing method than the Knight's Cure
I'd also suggest replacing a Knight with a White Mage, and adding another Black Mage only to be used this battle since physical attacks aren't that good against Kraken.
Red Mage is also a good option but Geomancer doesn't do well this battle because of random Whirlpool attacks when choosing Terrain. (Whirlpool's got no effect against Kraken)

Yeah...
I'll put Arc back into being my White Mage, Refia back into my Black mage, Ingus into a Black Mage, and Luneth.... into a Red Mage.
All mage
But only for this one occasion.
I'm gonna kill that Crackin' Kraken.

In that place, you'll find Blizzaga. It's the most damaging spell against the Kraken at this point in the game.
But, yeah, I think I beat it with a Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, and a Geomancer. 2/4 mages.

I'm actually about to get this game this week, so I hope all the jobs don't require me to be a mage. I know it wouldn't do that literally, but figuratively, I hope it's not a game that relies solely on magic because I like to add in the element of attack in FF games. Physical power FTW.
