Question FFII levelling system

what do you think of FF2's character system? did you like it?

personally I've thought of a game with a system like this but I never saw it anywhere else. Square sure made wide changes after FFI. It's unique and I had fun with it but the only thing that kinda bothers me is the slowness of development. I mean it's like you have to decide as early as possible if you're going to build one character as your supporter/white mage, attacker/knight, spellcaster/black mage etc. or you'll have a hard time later when the enemies are stronger. It's been very experimental but wasn't so bad in my opinion. I'd say it's impressive for such an early game. I rate it 6/10

how about you?

I had Firion be a healer/Attacker, Maria be the Black Mage and Guy be the Brute Basher.

I loved this system to be honest, it made leveling up be a little more realistic and I think square should reuse it later in the series.
Maybe revamp it a little bit but still reuse it.

yeah I totally agree about it being more realistic and they should do it some little refinements. wasn't that reused in another game? I think it's FF Legend.

I built Firion as my Knight, Maria as my white and black mage and Guy and Leon as secondary attackers with some support spells.

What I did was, in the normal FF2 game:
I made Firion my pure attacker. I mean, he had no magic on him what-so-ever.
I made Maria into a White Mage. Got her Cure to Level 16 before my first real runthough the Castle Fynn! I was deperately in need of it.
I made Guy into a Black/Support Mage. I know that sounds totally stupid, but it actually worked. You do not want to see Firion with Max Strength and Berserked, Hasted, and Auraed. It hurts.
I just made Leon a secondary attack with the Blood Sword. He didn't help much.

In Soul of Rebirth:
Minwu: Obvious I hope. Pure White Mage. Never attacked at all. Except for Ultima.
Josef: Made him my secondary attacker/support mage. He just didn't give the damage I wanted at times, and he served much better as a Support Mage.
Scott: Black Mage Ahoy! Give him: Flare, Holy, and all elemental skills, and he's a beast!
Ricard: My physical brute. I'm amazed that in the actual game, Ricard is sooooooo weak. In SoR, he kicks ass! Simple as that.

As for the leveling-up system, I found it frustrating at times. Like, I'd hit a guy 20 times in a row, and never got a strength point. I liked the variety though.

I didn't quite understand it at first but once you get used to it it's easy to use and can be pretty helpful seeing as it's quick and easy to get stronger with different weapons and such.

The only thing i like about training in ff 2 is that you need to level up everything for every character.

My Mood:
I HATE the FFII leveling system with a psssion ;_; its so damn confusing when your 12 years old, and it really hasn't aged well at all IMO

The level system was a good idea but they could've done it better. I don't like having to attack my own characters to increase their max HP. Plus having to cast a spell 1,000,000 times to get one level point at higher levels was just stupid.

Yiazmat

It was a unique idea, but it could've been implemented better. I found it frustrating yet refreshing.

Btw did anyone else have a situation where Guy got hit the most and made it to 9999 HP the fastest of everyone?
