Mastering Magic

I recently started playing final fantasy 2 and noticed in the magic screen it shows magic like this for example:

fire
1-12

Meaning its level 1 and ive used it 12 times im guessing? What i was wondering is how do you actually increase the level of your magic? Is it simply just through using it? Because when i looked at the booklet that came with the game it showed a picture of the magic screen and one piece of magic that was level 3 and had been used 20 times, although i have magic which is level 1 still and ive used it 20 times.

Fire 2 is an enhanced form of Fire 1, it doesn't mean you've used it 2 times, spells in this game are like Pokémon, they evolve and grow stronger the more you use it, and certain spells require more experiance to grow better xD

I havent got fire 2 yet, its still fire level 2 but it says ive used it 20 times. Do you know roughly how much it takes to level up magic?

Ah its ok i actually answered the question for myself, apparently you have to use it 99 times before it levels up
