Correct!
You get, of course, to play as the six main characters (Squall, Zell, Irvine, Rinoa, Selphie, and Quistis) but you also get to play as five others. In the beginning you get to play as Seifer, who is basically a slightly more powerful version of Squall; and later on you get to play as Edea for a short period of time. Then at several different points in the game, you get to play as Laguna, Kiros, and Ward. That brings the total up to 11.
