In the games, I usually use warriors to dispatch wussy random encounter monsters (even my mages just swing their staves in those situations.) But alot of boss fights are tough without using magic...
I'll have to say mages > warriors though, because if I had to be one or the other I'd rather be safely shooting spells from the back row.

I choose warriors!
I mean, warriors are really strong {don't get me wrong, mages are too! =]} and they can hold themselves up without having to resort too much to ranged magic attacks.
Cloud, Squall, and Zidane, are all warriors, so I guess I go with that.

I choose Fighters.
Apart from FFVII, I rarely use Black Magic. I did in FFIX since Vivi is in your party and he's no good at attacking. FFX aswell at the beginning when Lulu demonstrates using Black Magic on elementals. White Mages on the other hand are important but it probably is possible to proceed through the game with strong characters but as for Black Mages I am not too bothered about.

Hmm... The ability to kill hundreds with the ultimate magic or the ability to takes tons of damage and dish it out too? Staffs or swords? I choose fighters! They have tons of damage soak and can dish out lots of damages, while mages can do more damage with their magic, they certainly can't much punishment. Swords get my vote! Though I'll probably be stabbed by Black Mage for doing so.

i voted Fighter even thought i dont prefer either, i think it al depends on who or what your fighting elmtal creatures you ned a Mage but for the rest of them you ned a fighter

I choose mages. They can cast spells to ward off enemies and then heal your party members to keep them alive. Yeah, fighters are stronger, but that does not mean they will always stay alive.
I love magic and all the different types they have. Black Magic is my favorite and its very powerful.
