All characters have equal strengths if you train them enough- It depends on their celestial weapon abilitys and their overdrives.
Kimarhi's overdrive isn't all that great late on in the game and i don't the abilitys that the lance has either

Hes pretty much an in between character. He has no specific grid like everyone else, so he can go anyway he wants. In my main game i had him follow Tidus, in another i made him go towards lulu's. (And eventually brought him back for ultima)
But for me he was one of my most useless. Except his overdrive, which later on he does get a lot fo beastly ones.

I liked Kimarhi and I used him a lot. Some of his blue magic was really useful and for me he was stronger than everyone else in my party except for Auron. And he plays a useful role as Yuna\'s bodyguard and has a good part in the sequal X-2. Plus I like how he talks

hmmm kimahri was not needed as a character in reality, he was not strong in any department...but he made up for it in being the one true protected of Yuna, so he is valuable to the game.
i also luv his tuff like persona, only trusting those close to him.

Kimahri is versatile and is kinda put in to give you some freedom, as all other characters already got a class, you can choose the one for kimahri yourself.
My Kimahri is now just an allrounder who deals 2nd most physical damage in my team (after rikku! cuz she was the first one i could complete her weapon with triple AP, overdrive->AP,etc. xD), and 3rd most magic damage (after yuna and... rikku :p).
I forgot about him for half the game.
