When is the earliest I can acquire a fortune sphere?
I recently used a luck sphere on an empty node near Wakka's position. But I forgot that I need another special kind of sphere to activate that node, and now I'm holding back on Wakka's sphere grid advancement until I get it unless its reaaallly far down the road. I'm currently in Macalania Woods and I don't think I've found any Fortune Sphere yet.

just keep going, they are few and far between, you can always go back later, it's certainly not worth hanging around for. You can farm them in the Monster Arena later, but you will need to do a bit of training.
Ive not activated any yet in my most recent playthrough, too much like hassle

I think there are about 4 chests that have a fortune sphere in the whole game. You can win some from blitzball too. You aren't getting that fortune sphere any time soon so i suggest you move on and come back later.
You can also win them buy fighting the Earth Eater in the Monster Arena.

I'm almost positive the first Fortune Sphere you get is in Mi'ihen Highroad on the Oldroad. This is one of the ones that you need a chocobo to get to on a higher section. I'm pretty sure this is the one that is closest to the save sphere where the Mars Crest is (and a Jecht Sphere later on). So that would be the first Fortune Sphere you should be able to get.

Yeah, basically what Stang said, but you need a chocobo. Go down to Oldroad with your chocobo, spot the yellow feather, and press/mash X. Then you'll get multiple treasures including the fortune sphere.
