Read this article on ign: http://au.retro.ign.com/articles/998/998839p1.html
A lot of the info here is available on sites such as wikipedia, but this article ties it all together and also puts it into the context of what was happening in the world of gaming at the time. Recommended reading for all FF fans

Wow I can't believe I actually read the whole article. You are right in saying that the article tied everything together well and explained some of Square's decisions in relation to the gaming world. All in all, it was a pretty interesting read. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the link. I never actually realised that there was a 3D technical demo made with FFVI characters. I'd love to travel to that parellel Universe in which Square stuck with Nintendo. It would have been fascinating to see how they would have turned out.
Also, I never realised how Square tried to squeeze FFIV onto the NES. Cheeky!

No worries. The FF VI tech demo can be seen on youtube if anyone's interested:
Of course it's not very impressive by today's standards, but it's still interesting to see what FF might have looked like on Nintendo 64. Complete with the horrible trademark Nintendo 64 sound and all
