Even with an IRC room...that doesn't deal with the issue at hand in which we want to place a minimum requirement for a user to chat.

I'm actually for the 50 post requirement. Part of being on this site is you get more privileges as you prove to be a more dedicated member. I think if we allow people to use the Shout Box after the 50 posts and they are no long a junior member, we could accomplish both Fields' goal and Aztec's:
1. Less douchebags in the SB.
2. Weeding out the Spammers on the site.

This does seem like a good idea myself, and im fairly new. I would see a system like this working very well for one major reason alone. It would stop people lets say who are ignorant or banned from another site(what ever may be the reason) and spamming up a shoutbox. Or if there would be someway to create one, make a seprate shoutbox for those that can be approaite in the shoutbox and make it password protected. Send a pm to those who have the right for that shoutbox the password and then all the other people that just wanna spam and screw around have other like them. While the people that dont can enjoy conversations and talks without those type of spammers.

I think it's a good idea. The only downside for me is that I wouldn't be able to use it again until I get 50 posts, but hey, that won't take long.

Hence my idea of being given approval. Members like you have proved that they are capable of using the sbox without abusing it, and you wouldn't be able to just because you haven't posted enough yet.
But I know that that idea won't go through, so you'll just have to wait.
