General Blog #14 - "Please tell me you didn't break the internet..."

Time for another blog entry, I think. Briefly. I'm tired, and I feel like watching Smallville.

So, in the entertainment area, Forge of Darkness, Erikson's next novel comes out next week. If you're not excited about this, you should be. This is REAL fantasy at its finest; none of this Game of Thrones bullshit people hype up beyond all reasoning. Erikson's Magnum Opus is complete, but that he's expanding on some of the more interesting and enigmatic characters is cause for celebration. Looks like the Wheel of Time will be taking a back seat...thank god I have an excuse to stop reading it; I'm so BORED of it. Sanderson had better finish the series properly.

On the subject of games, I bought Pokemon Conquest. Don't ask me why; the answer should be obvious. It's Pokemon, and there isn't anything else worthy buying on the DS these days, and since the Vita isn't showing any signs of life, I need something that isn't on my PS3 to keep me occupied until Borderlands 2 comes out...or maybe Darksiders 2. I'm still up in the air about buying that. Should probably play Dragon's Dogma first...or trade it in; it's really boring. Anyways. Disgaea this is not. It's painfully simple. But it's fun enough, I suppose. Even if the character designs are ATROCIOUS. Don't believe me? Let's have a quick comparison, shall?

This is Akechi Mitsuhide in Pokemon Conquest.
This is Akechi Mitsuhide in Sengoku Basara.

One is a scythe-wielding maniac. The other is a bishonen with an ice-type fetish. But oh, maybe that's just a coincidence. Maybe it's just a one-off. Well.

This is Date Masamune in Pokemon Conquest.
This is Date Masamune in Sengoku Basara.

One is a little kid. The other wields six swords at once and rides a horse that doubles as a motorcycle. He also speaks in Engrish occasionally.

One more example, then, to prove my point.

This is Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Pokemon Conquest.
This is Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Sengoku Basara.

One is a clown. The other is ten feet tall at least, and can pierce the heavens just by raising his fist. He can also punch the ocean apart, walk through cannon fire without being affected, and stop a cannonball with an upraised hand. He's a motherfucking JUGGERNAUT.

The conclusion to be drawn from all this? Capcom should have made Pokemon Conquest. It would have been AMAZING. As it is, we have to put up with these mediocre character designs, and if I ever review this, it's getting marked down for being lazy and uninspiring. But otherwise fairly good fun. Although the Link method to recruit Pokemon is one of the most painfully stupid things I've ever seen. This is right up there with not being able to heal manually in Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Anyways, that's the entertainment stuff...minus my ever-increasing obsession with Pretty Cure. Now, on to the life stuff, which is probably boring and confusing, but eh...such is life.

It turns out I was inquiring down the wrong avenue about my PGCE...and, as my supervisor quite rightly pointed out, I can just qualify in a different subject and then go onto business afterwards. So I'm going to do a Maths PGCE (even though I hate Maths, I should be able to handle Secondary School maths...and I'm better prepared for it now than I was in my first year, where I had a stats course thrown on me and I went to pieces as a result of it) and move on to business afterwards...apparently getting a secondary education PGCE lets you teach at further education, as well; it's the qualification that matters, not the subject. Or something like that. I've had student finance and careers both telling me this, so I'm just going to take them at their word.

Go figure. It's better for me to do it that way anyway, because Business courses attract no additional funding, which is what I need if I'm going to do it. Doing this will get me a maintenance loan - hello, driving lessons; yes, I'm 22 and I can't drive yet, I've never needed to and my money funded my MSc instead - and a maintenance grant - goodbye, debt that I owe my mother for keeping me rent free for almost a year now - as well as a salary of £20,000 whilst I do the course, since I have a first class degree in a relevant subject...hurr hurr.

I may be jumping the gun a bit, but right now, I'm feeling pretty good about it...although it is now imperative that I get my literature review done and out the way over August, so I've only got fine-tuning and the analysis to do from September through to December, when I'll be doing the course. The lit review is the body of the work; it'll be about 7k...I'm 2k of the way through it, which has taken me a week, so I should be alright if I keep going into the library frequently...and stay the fuck off Tumblr. DAMN this site. I have more animated gifs than I know what do with now.

I may or may not be taking another extended leave of absence from the forum again soon...I'll let you all know come August; it depends on how things go over the next few days in terms of my ability to write and this other stuff. There is the distinct possibility I'll go on extended hiatus until mid-October...try not to cheer too loudly. xD

I don't really need to, I guess...I mean, I ran a very active RP on here during my third year finals; I'll be nowhere as busy now as I was then. But I've lost the motivation to be on FFF at the moment, so really it's more a convenient excuse than anything else. It's just difficult to be enthusiastic when not even the news threads make me laugh anymore - some of the comments people make are enough to make me cringe, and it's just the same old shit, over and over, so that's one huge part of my entertainment gone - and I'm not really motivated to roleplay here anymore. But at the same time, I don't want to outright quit; I've gotten comfortable on here, it's my third major forum, after the first two died horrible deaths, one at the hands of the company deleting the board, the other at the hands of a tyrannical administrator.

Eh. Despite my good feeling about this, I'm not in a very good place right now. I have this tendency to over-think everything, and as a result I just lose all interest in everything else. I think I'll be alright once I set my next course of action down in stone, but at the moment my life is up in the air. Waiting to crash down on me and probably crush me like a piano, cartoon style.

Anyways. As is becoming my thing...I leave you with a randomly selected video:

...more characterization than Lightning had for TWO games, in one minute and thirty-four seconds. Ha.
