Sweetie, that's what this is. Crisis Core is Zack's story. I believe that this game is going to give us pretty much everything we need to know about Zack, his SOLDIER days, etc...

Sephiroth cut him down in the Nibelheim mako reactor but he didn't die. Hojo dragged him to the Nibelheim manor basement and put them in mako tanks and shot them up with Jenova cells. Cloud got light mako poisoning and had no noticable effects to the jenova cells. Zack was in SOLDIER, so he was already introduced to mako and was not poisoned. Once Zack recovered from his wounds, Zack helped Cloud escape to Midgar where they were found by Shinra guards and shot. They shot Zack when he went to see if Cloud was ok. Then shot him at point blank range.

Actually, according to the Reunion Files, the only person that could see them was Cloud. The children could see Aerith because their youth and innocence allows them to see such things. That's why we often hear about children seeing things that we cannot. As for seeing Aerith at the end, in the Reunion Files, Nomura stated that Aerith lives on in Cloud's conciousness and his heart. She can physically manifest around him, so that much we know. As for Zack, since they were best friends and Cloud is living his life for him, I imagine it is much the same way. That's how it's put in the Reunion Files. Zack being Aerith's first boyfriend has nothing to do with that logic.
As for Zack he is dead, gone, was killed with bullets and is not coming back. He's not the man in the slums in FFVII, he's not any of these weird theories that some people are pulling out of their butts.

It's not a bad idea him faking his death, but I guess the evidence piled up against that theory. But mind you, Zack did have Jenova cells put inside of him for those who are arguing against Darkblade's theory. It would be interesting to learn Zack faked his death, but I think it's slightly impossible that he would.
