apart from materia fusion what does SP do i read sumthing about leveling up if its high but im lv 40 when i cleared the game and on new game plus i levelled up 5 times in 8 hours bt that might b because iv started on hard mode

I think there was some special materia which consumed SP to increase damage dealt, and other combat stats and well as decreasing damage received and such? But that materia is not obtainable until later in the game, amirite?

yes, sp turbo magic, sp turbo attack, etc, use sp to increase stats. but you're right- i think you can only get them from some of the harder missions. i'm through about 60% of missions and haven't come across them yet.
