This works a lot of the time but not always. Just beware, I've seen battles sprung up even when tightly hugging the walls. Just make sure you're properly outfitted and spend some time fusing some good materia, and use your head like a SOLDIER should...

I actually just noticed that yesterday. I thought I could get away from a few battles by going near to the wall as possible, but always ended up in battle anyway. So I suppose this trick isn't as useful anyway.
