Windows Media Player problem
I have an .avi file to play in Media Player. It's set as a file type that will play. However, when I try to play the file, it just comes up with one of the default visualisations  So how do I change this so my video will actually play?

I doubt it's your Media Player. Some files require the latest codec, so make sure you have all the updated player files before you try. However, my bet is that the file is corrupt. You could always try running it on RealPlayer or something similar.
Have you had this issue with other .avi extensions?

I've had this problem a number of times actually, yeah. I know it's not a corrupt file, because the sound still plays
Any recommendations for where to get the Codec then?

If you've had similar issues before, I suggest (even though it's probably already been considered and done by your good self) scanning Media Player with your anti-virus, juuuust in case. Also, which version are you running?

Or you can just check up on your current codec installation (you should probably have one... if not, then that's rather odd), and try to update your current version from there.
If nothing else works, try another player. And... take it to a specialist if you're running out of repairing ideas.

Well depends what problem you have I had this same problem a long time ago except I had to get the Divx and Xvid codec those are the codec's that i needed to play my AVI files.

If you want something other than Windows Media Player ( being the tempremental s.o.b. it is ) I'd recommend going for a programme called VLC Player, it plays a lot more file types by default than WMP, it's what I use for watching anime, which tend to be feature a gazillion different file types and codecs.
