Twilight
A lot of people at my school (myself included) have really gotten hooked on this series by Stephenie Meyer. Of course, I read it back when no one else even heard of it. But I find the twist on the eternal feud between werewolves and vampires really interesting, as well as the love story part... .
Has anyone else read this book, or any of them?

I have two (annoying ) friends that are obsessed with it, so I read like half of the first book and stopped.
Contrary to popular belief, I couldn't be arsed to finish it and I found it overrated. :/

I've read all three, and I absolutely love them. I can't wait until Breaking Dawn comes out in August! I'm excited to see whether or not Bella and Edward get married and of course the burning question of whether or not she becomes a vampire..

After hearing there'd be a film about it, I bought the book a few days ago and I loved it. I finished it a few hours ago and I'm going to be moving on to Eclipse when I can get my hands on it!

Hopefully this won't count as a bump... But I thought I should comment!
I also read Twilight before it became popular. And I almost died doing it too! (I was reading it while walking through Paris and a bus came extremely close to knocking into me.) It's certainly one of my favourite books, and Stephenie Meyer is a brilliant author, buuut...well, I wan't a fan of New Moon, and haven't managed to finish Eclipse yet. I suppose I should do that. (I'm just not a fan of reading the history of the werewolves and like to read it all in order. >.<)
Still, I'd recommend it! And for those who've enjoyed it, try reading A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitecomb. It's not too different, and is also very good!

So, has anybody read breaking dawn yet? I got it the day it came out, and I'm already done with it. I usually take my time with books, but I just had to see how it ended and everything.
Personally, I didn't really like it, but meh. I guess that's just what happens when you set your expectations really high for a book. Sometimes the author meets them and sometimes they just don't.

Oh lord, Twilight...
Here's a spolier for you, Bella whines for 500 pages. Yeah, it's pretty much about, an emo twat who has no goals or dreams and constantly thinks about some abusive schmuck with a shiny face (References to Edwards beauty through Twilight: 165, it reminds me of a 15 year old girls diary of her dreams about how Zac Efron will rescue her from her horrible horrible life, except not as well written).
She is just a horrible Mary Sue although seems to have no personality, she's not witty, nor is she independent, oh and every decision she makes without Edward ends in disaster which says a lot.
Oh, and don't get me started on the sexism. Bella can never save herself, she is always being saved by Edward as if she's some kind of weak damsel in distress, and even the female vampires are weak, when Bella is being saved in the big fight at the end by Edward and Carlisle, the other female vampires are nowhere around and Alice only takes orders from Carlisle on how to help. Why are the women incapable of fighting? And where are the female werewolves?
And what kind of boyfriend is Edward anyway? He spies on her when she's asleep (WHICH SHE FINDS FLATTERING), and as mentioned before he yells at her all the time, sometimes even for no apparent reason. Also, Edward is about 100 years old and chooses to go to high school for...what, exactly? The fun of it? Because he's a moron? And he's bloody insane, even going so far as to take the engine out of her car so she can't see her best friend.
Actually, I could go on and on about the absolute rot that is Twilight but here's a review from Amazon that sums it up-
Quote:
|
"I was given Twilight to read by a 14-year-old daughter of a friend. She practically glowed when describing it. I borrowed her copy and finished it in about 24 hours. As I read, I became more and more disturbed by what I was seeing. While it's a page-turner and certainly draws you in, the book is poorly written and extremely superficial. But that's not the problem. Pretend for a moment that Edward is not a vampire, but merely a controlling, obsessive, dangerous, violent, stalking, unpredictable, unstable human male. Try re-reading some of the main characters' conversations with that in mind. As a mother, I'm not so worried about my daughter falling in love with a vampire. What I am worried about is her being influenced by the kind of all-too-human male I've just described. And Bella is the worst possible heroine. She puts herself at mortal risk over and over simply to satisfy her own physical desires. She is ready in an instant to sacrifice her whole life for some ridiculous idea of love that is obviously just intense sexual attraction. Is that what we want modeled for our daughters? Do we want them to think that it's okay to give in to their feelings even when they go against everything we have tried to teach them, much less their own common sense? Or do we want them to be self-controlled, self-confident, inspired, patient, hopeful, smart, accomplished, sensible, and wise? I am afraid that by romanticizing this kind of unhealthy relationship, Meyers gives her young readers permission to be victims, as long as it's all for love. Don't we see enough of the results of that every day on the news? I understand why teenagers might fall for this erotic daydream, but where are all the outraged mature women who should be setting the record straight? Why are they giving their silent (and not so silent) approval to this regrettable book? "

This isn't supposed to be a a flame Twilight thread my good sir
Anyway, Bella changes a lot in the fourth book. I don't want to give too much away, but "damsel in distress" doesn't quite fit her anymore. That was actually one of the things I liked about her though in the first 3 books. Edward coming to her rescue made the book what it was, a romance.

where are the female werewolves

Happens in the third book xD
As for the thing you quoted, that woman just needs to calm down. Stephanie Meyer admitted that the books were supposed to appeal to an audience over 15 years of age and tried to get an age limit set, but it didn't happen. If that woman's so damn worried that her daughter is going to end up obsessed with sex and have an abusive husband someday then she can take the books away from her and burn them for all I care. Sheesh

I got Breaking Dawn yesterday when it was released here in the UK and I finished it several hours ago. Wow! What a good ending to the Twilight Saga. I was surprised by the arrival of "Nessie" and I knew that Bella would become a vampire in the end. I wasn't disappointed by it and I can't wait to read The Midnight Sun. According to what I read on Wikipedia, it's supposed to be Twilight based on Edward's point of view.
