1st or 3rd Person (Literature)

Which is better in your opinion? First person, i.e. the author talks through the main character, or third person, i.e. the author talks through either an omniscient being or a semi-omniscient being.

Personally I like it better with 3rd person because it's much more flexible that way in terms of plot twists and character development. But then 1st person helps to give you that sense of mystery or foreboding that omniscient narrators can't provide unless done right and intricately.

Anyways, this is just to show me what your preferences are, since I'm trying to start fiction writing.

So...?

I've read very few books in 1st person perspective. Apart from several Goosebumps books, I've only read one book like that. It helps to create the atmosphere if it's in first person, because the reader is constantly kept in the dark until the last about plot twists ans such, whereas you usually know beforehand with 3rd person.

But 3rd person books tend to be more descriptive and are generally more interesting.

Overall, it doesn't bother me too much, as long as it's a good book.

Yea, I agree with both of you. Third person perspective all the way. I can't name any 1st person perspective book that could accomplish the same things a 3rd person perspective book could.

It also allows for something that is absolutely essential in storytelling of any nature... and that is self-description. For the most part every story has one character that is more prominent and important than all the rest. That person needs to be described in detail, not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, psychologically... and constantly as the story takes dramatic turns. A person cannot look onto his own situation and describe it with nearly as much clarity as a person from a 3rd person perspective could. Because of that, 3rd person simply allows for more details in general.

There's some pretty decent 1st person perspective book. But I still prefer 3rd person. 1st person seems like it's coming from the author's point-of-view...which can usually be biased when it comes to particular situations.

3rd person seems more worldly and universal, which I really like. It actually makes you think more.

I've read a series of books called The Silver Sequence, by Cliff McNish, and they flick between 1st and 3rd person as the chapters progress, and every chapter systematically flicks between the main characters. It sounds like an awful idea, but it really couldn't have been better.

It depends on the story for me. One thing I can't stand is when books are written in the present tense.

I write in 3rd person for my series mainly for the aforementioned "flexibility" issue. However, I do want to give 1st person a shot down the line, but probably for a short story rather than a full novel, just to try it out.

The good thing about 1st pespective is that the only truth you can glean from the events comes from the 1st person narrator. In other words, you are completly dependant on that person for the story, and hence, you can never be entirely sure whether or not that person is telling the truth. The best example of this is probably Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.

Another good book in 1st person narrative in which you share in the confusion and pain of the narrator is Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

And finally, one of the greatest books from the 20th century, The Great Gatsby was in 1st person.

So, although we shouldn't strictly say that one form is beter than the other, because in the end it is the writer who determines how good the story becomes, I would side with 1st peron narrative only because I like my books to have the more personal, introspective and much more confusing touch than most 3rd person narratives have.

And of course, we're completly ignoring 2nd person narrative in this discussion? It's probably the most over used form of expression on the internet since pedo bear.

A book with 2nd person 'you'?

I couldn't imagine a story/novel using that entirely throughout a work of literature...

I personally like first person a lot better, but I'm also more partial to literary fiction as opposed to mainstream, so it goes with it that I prefer the style that more typically delves into psychological character development.

However, I do like the flexibility of third person.

So to be most accurate, I like a very limited third-person, such as Harry Potter, in which the story might as well be told from first person except for a few scenes. Even though it's told in third person, it only delves into the mind and emotions of the focal character, similar to first person, and almost never leaves that focal character to follow any of the supporting characters, except when absolutely necessary.

When it comes down to writing things like FanFiction then I don't mind the 1st person view so much. I've read quite a few fanfics through 1st person view such as Final Fantasy fics, Full Metal Alchemist fics and Inuyasha fics and always have enjoyed reading them.

However when it comes to writing, I've never written in first person view and have been contemplating on trying it for quite sometime. When it comes down to reading a book, I've never read a 1st person view book. I think when it comes to an actual novel I'd prefer reading 3rd person view. The amount of detail is a lot more in a 3rd person view but with a 1st person view, that person can express more of what they're feeling. I guess you could say I like both, but I wouldn't want to read an entire book done in 1st person view.
