Uniform

What are people's opinions on uniform, more specifically, school uniform? Do you think that it is a good thing as far as equality goes, or do you think that it is pointless and unnecessary for education?

Personally, my school has a dress code (black trousers/skirt, white shirt, black jumper, black shoes, tie) and I guess it doesn't really bother me. It only gets annoying when teachers start eating your head off because your jumper is grey one day of the week, or whatever. =/

Anyway, opinions?

I think it's good for equality as well, and generally reduces bullying based on clothing, etc. Some schools are perhaps too strict with their dress codes, and ban things purely out of a desire to control everything. However, things such as earrings, tattoos, and dyed hair are probably a bit over the top. What should matter is that a schoolkid appears to be part of the school community, and not just a drone unable to display any individuality at all. So yes, what matters more is that the child is wearing smart trousers and a jumper with the school logo on it, and adhering to appropriate discipline. Don't want unruly kids thinking that they're free to do whatever they like and disobey rules, etc, and uniform instills some basic respect in immature kids. Some schools go waaay over the top and extend dress policy to hair, etc. I don't know what the discipline situation is in US schools, but it seems pretty orderly over here, despite the nasties who go out of control and try to ruin it for everyone.

My school started banning the wearing of hats this year, and I was previously known as the Hat King. I'm exceedingly annoyed by it, but I guess I'm used to the rule by now. I still break the rule by wearing hats and bandannas sometimes in a bit of a rebellion, but eh. Sometimes things have to change to protect people, I guess, but most of us at my school hate the rule.

As far as uniforms go, I think it's good to make everyone equal visually in terms of wardrobe for it reduces some of the 'hazing' or what have you, but by no means does it completely eliminate bullying or whatever. People at my school basically don't really judge people by how they dress, but instead by how they carry themselves, speak, and act. Enforcing uniforms takes away the chance to creatively display oneself, and it's just another way for school administration to control their students.

In summary, strict dress codes and uniforms are wack imo.

I didnt really like wearing a uniform at the time but I doi think its a good idea. i'd hate finding new things to wear and I also it would open up alot more bullying. I got yelled at alot for wearing trainers but it never really bothered me all that much. I was always too much of a tomboy in school and getting yelled at for not looking presentable but I'd still rather of worn a uniform than my own clothes

Id of liked a uniform at work actually. I resented wearing my own clothes because then Id never want to wear them outside work. It would just make life easier for a lazy arse like me

Yeah is to make sure that the students dress properly, even though they still do what they want anyway. In my school, we wear an uniform, specific color for pants and shirt with the school logo on it. Regardless of the reasons, there will be always, or at least, one occasion in which you will have to wear an uniform (if you haven't so far). Sometimes it's a requirement for a job, and it has the same purpose: equality.

Also it makes things more organized somehow, I don't know.
By the way in my school they banned:
-Use of hats
-Use of long necklaces
-Use of big earrings (it made the ladies angry)
-Use of MP3,4, CD players, etc.
-Use of cellphone (as long as the Principal doesn't sees it...what she doesn't knows can't hurt 'em )

Yeah, I prefer having a uniform at school to being allowed to wear what I like, as it means I have to put less effort into what I put on. And you just know that people are going to be judgemental when you wear the same thing three days in a row or whatever.

I agree with the main reason for the uniform, in that it shows that you are from a certain school, bringing a sense of security aswell especially when pillocks from other schools come down to start fights. But when it gets to cases like being shouted at for wearing trainers or having bright hair, then that is just the school being nazi bastards and being controlling just because they can. I don't see why they would want to though, it's just a case of 'Ooh look at how neat and tidy our students are, they must be better than you!'. And there was me thinking that we weren't meant to judge people on appearances...

I had major issues with peircings, hair colour and jewellry. I think that was abit OTT to be honest, just because I dye my hair alot doesn't mean it affects my work. Its me pissing about and talking too much that did that. I also think it's a stupid reason for being suspended aswel. How exactly is that gunna help your education? O_o

I like the idea of uniforms. I just wish we had more stylish uniforms, like the ones in Japan. Polo shirts and beige skirts [which is a pretty common uniform around here], isn't the prettiest thing, ever.

At my previous job, everyone had to wear a uniform, and it made working together so much easier. If any of these people were in my school, they would have never talked to me, since most judgment of me would be based on my clothing-style. But, because we all had the same uniform, the people there would approach one another without any judgments.

I think it really does help with equality, and it also helps to rid of the Administration time that's wasted on sending girls home who like to wear skimpy outfits. Not only that, but getting ready in the morning, at least for girls, is a lot easier. You don't have to fish through your expansive wardrobe. Just grab your uniform and go.

So, I like uniforms.

I hated my uniform, it was green and yellow. Gross as hell. We were labelled as green bottles and it was horrid in winter as you wore tights or froze! Im annoyed as I signed loads of petitons for girls to wear trousers and few years ago, they brought them in! Id already left!

You had to wear a green blazer and it had to be wore at all times. Jumper was optional, but both was too much.
