I've experienced this a couple times and it was all during a nightmare that I was beginning to have. As it happened I wasn't sure what was going on, and when I finally snapped out of it I was couldn't tell if I was actually sleeping and it was in my mind, or if it actually happened.
Until it happened a second time where I got so freaked out after I went to the hospital because I thought I was dying.

Well the person that appeared in my dream was one of my aunts, and her mother was a witch. Now every time I see my aunt, I automatically begin to feel nervous.
Because I believe in such a thing as being too late.

Does anyone have narcolepsy or cataplexy, because than could play its part?
To be honest I've never had any sort of sleep disorders at all, let alone SP and I don't know anyone (apart from here) who has had an experience of SP, and I'm glad, it sounds very serious and it could quite easily lead to other things under the right conditions, all I know is that when you do wake up you have to try and not panic (albeit, I know it would be hard) because the stress of it could well make it happen again, so the blood/oxygen needs to circulate around the body in a normal state.
However, my mam has seen it quite often as she is a doctor and has to deal with all sorts of people in stressful conditions. I know when I was at the hospital one woman said that it was like a vampire type thing would quite literally just sit on her chest and have his hands around her throat.
But, I don't know huge amounts about it so I can't go into any great detail about it though I know if it occurs to soom people regularly they should try not to change their sleeping patterns or sleep during the day and go to bed early-ish.
Its better to talk to people about these situations as the more information you can gather about these events (I very much agree with Mitsuki's spiritual theory), the less you will panic.
I wish good luck to everyone who has and still experiences it.

I realized it usually happens when I am under a lot of stress and anger. So in order to avoid it, I try to relax myself before going to sleep. Usually reading a good book does the trick for me

I have a similar feeling to that, although it felt more like I was in the process of going to sleep, and being conscious throughout that process. Although I did have a strange dream where I was being strangled, only to wake up with my arm around my neck on my side so it felt as if I were actually strangling when I moved.
