Well, if that's how you feel about inking and coloring, I suggest making simplistic characters and practicing on them before trying to ink complete characters (the ones above). It can be a little tedious, but you'll be satisfied with the results once you get some practice in.
...also, you should keep in mind what sort of ink you use before coloring. Some will dry quickly, some won't, some will smear or blot if you try and use a wet medium (ie watercolors or markers). Colored pencils are a good start, though.

I guess I might try a few things to see what suits me best:
My friend says that he uses an extra black pencil to outline his characters instead of inking, then uses photoshop for coloring.
I saw this tutorial on deviantart about inking and coloring using certain markers that looked interesting.
I could also research certain types of pens that I could use for inking...
